confession: I haven't gone for the glucose test...

I just realized it.  My doctor gave me the requisition about 6 weeks ago.  Somehow I've forgotten all about it.

I have not confessed this to my doctor yet.

He didn't really talk much about it, and didn't make it sound like a big deal to get done when he gave it to me.

 Am I a horrible person?

Re: confession: I haven't gone for the glucose test...

  • Of course you're not a horrible person.  Some people don't get it and don't care.  Some won't get tested, but eat as if they might have GD instead.  And some go get tested to find out if they have it or not.

  • I would be more concerned that your doc hasn't noticed or said anything to you. You would think they would be wanting those results.

  • You're not a horrible person but you should probably just suck it up and go.  Uncontrolled GD leads to a ton of crap but also could lead to an avoidable surgery for you and an avoidable NICU stay for your LO.  Blood sugar issues and jaundice are possible issues that your LO can get from your uncontrolled diabetes.  Both or either of those may lead to a NICU stay, keeping your baby from you in its first days of life just because you didn't want to drink a sucky drink.  Nevermind the possibility of a possible section for you because of the baby's size.

  • Your Dr can get in trouble for you not getting tested. It's not that bad, I would just get it done with.

  • It's not been intentional... it just completely got away from me.  I haven't met my OB yet, so I plan is to go before I have that appointment.

I'm glad to hear it's not something everyone does, though.  Makes me feel better.

  • A friend of mine's doctor never even requisitioned one. She asked later why not and he said he didn't see any indication that he needed to. He wasn't worried about it.

  • Yeah, just do it.  It's not that bad and you really should know whether you have GD so you can adjust appropriately to avoid problems listed by PPs.  You can do it!

  • I JUST got diagnosed with gest diabetes and you are only a week ahead of me.  You can still do the test or just watch your carbs and cut out refined sugars.

    This exactly.

  • PS: You are not a horrible person. :) Just go and get it taken care of. The 1 hour was NOT a big deal.

  • No, you're not horrible. I opted out of the GD screen this pregnancy, so it's not something that's mandatory for everyone. But it it's important to you to get it, then just go. Like other posters have said, it's not bad at all (I've done it with my other pregnancies).

  • My doctor hasn't noticed because I think he directed the results to go to the OB, and i haven't met the OB yet.  I'm hardly concerned that my doctor isn't doing his job.

I guess if it's an optional thing (which, really, what isn't optional about pregnancy testing) that would explain the lack of urgency around it.

  • The test is optional, don't feel bad at all.
Gestational Diabetes, is a common issue for women during pregnancy, and symptoms are confusing, that's why its part of the protocol.
If your Doctor hasn't mentioned it, he probably just assumed that your 'declined' it.
    Which is fine.

    I declined it.
