C-sections

How long did you wait before carrying LO in the carseat?

I am 4wks pp and had to drop DD#1 off at preschool by myself with DD#2 & DS along so I carried DS from the car into the school to DD's classroom and back to the car. I am really feeling sore around my incision now.

DS is over 10lbs + the weight of the carseat.

So...gow long did you wait before carrying LO in the carseat?

Re: How long did you wait before carrying LO in the carseat?

  • 2 weeks PP I think??  With my first C-section, that doc told me at 2 weeks I could carry baby in the infant seat so I figured this time would be the same.  Carried him in the seat, saw my doc for 2 week appointment the next day and she told me nothing heavier than the baby til 6 weeks.

Rather difficult to accomplish when my husband is out of town for 2 weeks working but I'm sticking to it as close as I can now.  I definitely noticed an increase in PP bleeding if I lifted too much....that's tapered off now but I'm trying to follow her orders!

  • Honestly? 3 days. Dh and I went to Target to pick up my meds. Dh had to take care of our toddler (he was w/ us) while I grabbed the carseat and put it into the cart. I did this twice and honestly it didn't bother me.

I didn't actually full on carry him until 1 wk though.

I waited the full 2 wks w/ my first ds though.

  • I waited at least 4 weeks but I think it was more like 6 weeks. DH was really freaked out at the thought of me having an incision that big and would not let me do anything other than holding baby for the first 6 weeks.
  • I think about 3 weeks... and it was fine.  I just made sure to be careful.

  • I didn't wait.  My OB said it was fine to lift him in his infant carrier, but I shouldn't lift anything heavier than that.

Hmm..  I was told when leaving the hospital to not carry anything heavier than the baby in the carseat....  So I could have done it right away.

However, it was probably a good 3 weeks before I did.

  • It was probably a couple weeks.  I didn't drive for probably 3 and made DH carry her carseat until then.  I have a Chicco and it's heavy.  Even now I have a hard time lifting it into DH's truck, and it was about a month or so before I could life it without being sore.

  • I don't think I had any reason to leave the house without DH to help until DD was 3w2d (I know this because it was a Friday) - I met friends for lunch downtown and had to carry DD in her car seat a couple blocks to and from the restaurant. It was a little uncomfortable but I had no lasting pain.

Coming in the house when we came home from the hospital. It wasn't a big deal - my son was only 7lbs1oz at birth, and a little less at 3 days old, when we came home. Lifting him in it for an extended period of time (from the house to the car, etc), it was probably two weeks.

  • I'm going to try to wait as long as possible. It will probably be around 2.5 weeks.

  • Ok so I have mentioned on here that I had a super easy recovery from C-section. I had LO 12/17 was home 12/19 and on 12/23 my staples started coming out on their own due to me healing quickly. I called my OB who said go ahead and come in now I have time to remove them otherwise we will be closed until after the holidays. I was feeling fine so I packed up LO in the car and put the stroller in the car and drove to the OB's office. LO slept in the carseat attached to the stroller while he removed the staples. He said now remember no driving and no picking up heavy objects for about another week or so. I am assuming your husband drove you here. I laughed and said I came all by myself. Hubby is working. He said well are you on pain meds and I said no and he said well then just be careful when picking up the stroller and carseat not to strain yourself.

I was super paranoid about the incision reopening. I waited until I was cleared at my 6 weeks appointment. If I needed to go anywhere before this, either DH, MIL or my stepmom would go with me to help with DD.

  • I was told that I could immediately.  My weight limit was the baby in the seat.  I had them on a Thursday, DH was off the following week and returned to work on Monday so I had to carry them around by then.
  • I don't remember but I do know that I carried my stroller down 2 sets of stairs at 6 days PP and I was fine.  H was pissed, but I was fine.

  • I waited like 6 weeks to carry DS in his carrier. But I didn't really go anywhere with him anyway. And when I did, DH carried the carrier.
