Oatmeal cereal & pooping issues... A little help?

So I've started sparingly introducing Oatmeal Cereal to DD. She is ok with it, and tends to enjoy eating off her spoons. Pooping has always been an issue with her even when she was BF. She just seems to have a hard time passing poop. It isn't textbook constipation (not hard and pellet-like), but it seems like such drama for her.

We got that under control by switching to gassy/fussy formula from similac. Then I went* and effed it up with the cereal. She had a diaper blowout on Saturday along with an hour long freak-fest beforehand. Nothing since, and she just started her dinosaur roaring to pass another stool. I am getting ready to check her diaper and change it.

So my question is this-- can I put a little bit of apple sauce in with her oatmeal to help with this? We've tried diluted prune juice, but as you can imagine the shocked face when she tastes it in with her bottle.

Does anyone else have this issue?

  • No issue, but I really don't see why not.  As long as it is unsweetened.

  • Why not? And offer water in a sippy.

  • That's what I thought-- my MIL has me all paranoid about solids because she is already harping on DD's weight. DD is 20% for her age group, so she is no where near fat or overweight. The doctor is happy and so am I.

For the record, my MIL has a history of being a fat-shaming harpy. I am constantly at odds with her & have had to politely (as possible lol) let her know that "my kid, my way.". Thankfully H has had "the talk" with her about it all, but this woman is relentless. I could write a novel so I'll leave it at that.

That is why I wondered about the apple sauce. I am now paranoid about making my child fat. MIL has tapped into my FTM insecurity. Sad

  • Not apples! Apples also lead to constipation. They are part of the BRAT group to give when LOs have diarrhea to help it stop.

I would try pears or prunes.

  • My kid was the same.  Pooped every other day on formula and always a huge production.

We started oatmeal and at first, she seemed worse.  But now, I think she has normalled out. She even pooped twice in 12 hours....crazy for her. And less straining. But much more farting.  But that is good since it isnt trapped in there.

We have always given sugar water.  About 3-5 ounces per day now.

  • Called the pedi about this yesterday. We were told to switch from rice cereal to oatmeal, give a bit of water and give foods with fiber like prunes and pears. Just like others have posted. So LO one and I headed to target and stocked up...now I'm crossing my fingers! Good luck!
