Breastfeeding

Why does DS do this?

A lot of times when I feed DS (he is EBF), he sucks for a few seconds, then pulls off, sucks a few more seconds, pulls off, and so on and so forth. Is he doing this because the milk flow is too fast?

He's pulling off cause the milk flow is too fast--do you hit the wall behind his head with the flow when he pulls off?

or he's working to get your let down to flow faster

or he's found a new toy to play with

or he's pulling off to fight the sleep the comes when he gets down and eats a whle meal and he wants to stay awake, so when he feels the sleep coming he pops off and wakes himself up.

or he's thinking this nursing is a lot of work, maybe mom will give me a bottle those are much easier to eat from

or .... there is not just one answer to this, what do you think?

Ok, you made me laugh. No, I don't hit the wall with milk, but it's something to aspire to I guess. I have hit myself in the face with milk on a few occasions when I express a little before I start nursing him, though. Smile

  • Around 3 months babies start to get more social so they can do what you are describing.  DD did the same thing.  I bought a nursing necklace off Etsy and that helps alot. It's just a ring on a necklace that she can play with while she nurses.
