Hey mamas,
I was wondering how losing the baby weight is coming along. I started using myfitnesspal, a calorie counting website, again that I used since 2008 up until pregnancy. It helped me monitor what I ate and initially helped me lose 25 lbs. So here I am again, back at mfp and struggling with how much I should eat to lose while nursing. I have 30 lbs to lose, maybe 35 to be at my ideal weight. I religiously followed a 1200 a day plus added in the 500 for breastfeeding, plus on my workout days added another 550 or so cals, that left me with a grand total of 2,250 cals to eat daily with a projected weight loss of 1.5-2 lbs a week. I didn't see the scale really budge. For those of you who understand how the deficit works, what am I doing wrong? I can partially answer my own question-a. I probably haven't been at it long enough. b. Maybe I need to not count cals while breastfeeding (the weight isn't just flying off like I heard it would c. I need more cals? The latter sounds ridiculous, that's a lot of cals to eat if I need more than 2250, especially if I'm not hungry. I read somewhere that a nursing mom needs about 2700 a day, which I guess I understand that a typical daily intake of cals is around 2000-2200 plus the extra 500 for producing milk...
I guess my question is, for those of you who are losing the baby weight steadily while breastfeeding, what is your diet like, what is your activity level and how many cals are you eating approximately? Also, are you working out? I really hit the gym hard with mostly cardio (spin and step classes) and some weight training, until I made myself so sore that I fell off the wagon completely and it was a huge pain to even get out of a chair or go down stairs....and no, I didn't see my milk supply affected.
Re: counting cals..bf moms come in
I'm just making sure I'm eating enough good food for my daughter and to produce lots of good milk for her. I haven't actually been trying to lose weight yet but I'm 10 pounds away from my pre-preg weight. However, I was overweight to begin with so that's not saying much.
I will feel MUCH safer to curb the calories once I'm done BF'ing. I'm sure I would be fine now but I really don't want any supply issues (a lot of my friends had them).
I'm equally uncertain. i eat 1700-2200 work ouiy hard 4-5 days a week (cardio and weights) i've steadily lost some inches and maybe a # a week.....but its not flying off. the ;ast few days ive been sick and lazy ate more burned less and finally dropped below 140....starting to think i need to eat more? (also using something like mfp)
eta my supply i s great!

I did something like myfitnesspal before the BFP and dropped 40lbs just watching the calories. Now, with BFing, it's different. I am below my PP weight, but I can't seem to lose those last 5-10lbs to get me to my ideal weight... All that to say, I don't know!
I refuse to count calories right now since I want to make sure I am eating enough for my supply and myself, but it's frustrating since I just want to lose those last few pounds!
It is a tricky balance. I eat about 1800-2000 calories a day with 30 min of moderate exercise. I have been losing about a pound a week. I think staying very hydrated is important for milk production, especially when you increase activity. I know the scale isn't moving much for me, but I can tell my clothes are feeling different.
I haven't read the other responses yet but wanted to jump in. I'm doing MyFitnessPal too, and it's been really helpful to me. I try to eat about 1800 cals per day regardless. I don't mind if I go up to 2000, but I shoot for 1800.
I workout doing the 30DS and either walk on the treadmill and use the bike. The most I would burn in 1 day is 375 if I do a combination, but I usually at least burn about 100 per day (I do 5 days of the 30DS and 4 days of the treadmill or bike, each week).
I also give myself a cheat day, but still w/in reason. Those days I go over 2000, but I just move on the next day. On my cheat days I will have a Caramel Mocha, maybe a Pepsi, some kind of dessert ... and a reasonable lunch and dinner. In my opinion, I feel like I need an "off" day not only for my sanity (and indulgences), but to trick my body - so that it's not used to the same thing (or amount of calories) every day.
I make sure to drink lots of water, too.
I've lost about 1-2 lbs per week using MFP (8 total), and want to lose another 7-10 lbs.
