giving LO water

Has anyone started yet? The pedi said it's fine to give him a little bit of water each day but we haven't done anything yet because I'm not sure he'll be interested. Do you give it in a sippy cup? I never really thought about adding water because I always thought he'd just have breastmilk for the first year and not any other liquids.

Re: giving LO water

  • No, my pedi hasn't said anything about this yet.. and I'm not quite sure why they would need water at this age.

  • With DD#1 we started letting her experiment with a sippy cup at 6 months and we put an ounce of water in it.  Other than that I never gave water as a drink until after 1 year.

  • I always heard you start water in a sippy cup at the same time you start solids and once they are eating actual "meals" to give water with all meals.

  • I've put being 1 oz in his sippy cup when we give DS solids. He doesn't even put a dent in it though, I just want DS to explore the sippy cup.

This.  This is what we did with DD.  Also, we used the Nuby (or maybe Nuk) sippy cups that had a wide, silicone spout so it was the closes to a bottle nipple we could fine.  She never had any problems with it.  (She was 6 months when we started.)

  • We've given DS a little water in a bottle. It's starting to warm up here so I want to keep him hydrated. I'll eventually start offering a sippy cup with water.

  • My pedi only mentioned giving water if DD seems dehydrated.. They said its 5oz per day and it should be broken up (can give by bottle or sippy cup) We are not planning on doing this unless we have too.

  • My pedi told me no water until 6 months, so I'm going with that.
