Breastfeeding

XP: Breastfeeding and pacifiers

So the plan is for me to breastfeed our LO once he is born. We are having a circumcision done and the doc has recommended giving him a pacifier to soothe him during this procedure.

Any moms out there have this experience and was there any 'nipple confusion'?

We will be bottle feeding breastmilk as well probably starting around week 4, just so DH can help out as well as there will be times around week 6 and then when I go back to work when I will need to be away from LO for a few hours and want him to be able to be fed if needed.

This was also posted on 3rd tri board.

TIA!

  • DS got a paci when he was 10 days old and a bottle when he was 2 weeks old. No nipple confusion whatsoever.

  • All of my kids had pacifiers starting in the hospital and I nursed all of them.

The nurses in the NICU also told me there is no such thing as nipple confusion... don't know if that's true but they all thought it gets a lot of hype for nothing.

  • I was nervous about pacis, but they gave DD one when she was two days old so that she'd be calm for her hearing test, and there were no problems.  I think if your latch is good, its not a big issue, and even if latch isn't great, one time isn't going to do anything.

  • Thanks! That is awesome, cause I totally believe in the pacifier and was a little concerned it could cause a problem with bfing even if we get off to a good start!

    Thanks Ladies!

  • Agree with others - both my kids got pacifiers in the hospital and both breastfed with no issues. The lactation consultant never mentioned nipple confusion to me.

  • My first baby had an incredible urge to suck. We held out for 10 days and then gave her a paci and it was like she was a different baby. She needed to suck to sooth herself. She had a terrible latch to begin with so I'm not sure it made any difference. With my second baby, we gave her a paci almost right away. I think she was only 2 days old. Anyway, she's a nursing champ. It didn't seem to make a difference at all.

  • Pretty much all babies get a pacifier with a little sugar water on it to soothe them during circumcisions. If you don't really want to continue the pacifier after that, that's fine. My LC recommended no pacifiers for the first 4 weeks or until breastfeeding is well established. That's what we did, so I can't really speak for pacifier related nipple confusion. My best friend is a NICU nurse and they love to hate on the whole 'nipple confusion' theory. However, I had a situation where we gave a bottle (I was against it but had no support - there was no LC on call at the time), and my daughter's previously great latch became extremely painful. It lasted about a week and we were able to get back on track, but my nipples hurt just thinking about it. I wouldn't say it's innocuous, but I wouldn't worry about the circumcision pacifier. He's probably better off with it!
