Alternative to Poly vi Sol

I am EBF my little guy. He's not quite 3 weeks old. Our ped told us to give him 1ml once a day of Poly vi Sol. However, LO hates it! He spits out at least half of it and it makes a mess. I saw a post about another type of vitamin that ladies gave their babies instead... Something called Carter's ( could be totally off on the name)?

I can't find the post where it was mentioned. Appreciate any help!

  • We use Carlson drops. I think that might be the brand you're thinking of? I just put a drop on a pacifier and we are good to go.

That might be it! I knew it began with a "C"! Does it have the nutritional content of the Poly stuff but just need to give a little drop?

  • It has 100% of the Vitamin D that babies need in just one little drop. You can put it on a pacifier, bottle, or even a finger. My DD doesn't mind the taste at all!

  • The Poly vi Sol drops are nasty. They have Vitamin D and iron in it. Does your LO need the iron supplement? If he only needs Vitamin D you can try the Tri vi Sol drops. LO still has to take 1mL, but it smell much better. DS's son recommended it.

The ped didnt say anything about his iron levels, just said he needed Poly vi Sol...I was a little surprised by him telling me about the drops, so I wasn't prepared to ask questions. I figured with breastfeeding, he would be getting all the nutrients he needs. I know now that's not completely the case.

  • I hate this crap! I've given it to DD only once and at her visit to the pedi yesterday she of course asked if I was giving it to her and I told her the truth- she hates it and it gets all over her clothes so I don't give it to her. I told her I would start to put it in her bottles though (since that would at least be easier) when I give her pumped milk about twice a week (didn't tell her how often haha). So I stuck it in her bottle today and it makes the milk look SO FREAKING NASTY. I'm not going to blame DD at all if she refuses the bottle when I give it to her later. I will look into this Carlson's stuff and maybe get it if it's cheap, anyone know the price range? I like that it would be only one drop... a friend told me about giving her DD one that was such a small amount and this must be the stuff. I especially hate that Poly Vi Sol has a bunch of dyes/colors/flavors or some kind of added ingredients in it. Anyone know if the Carlson's has anything "extra" in it?

  • We tried the d vi sol and LO hated it, so we quit.  Pedi never recommended it and never asks, and I don't bring it up.  I take my vitamins, and I try to get us both out in the sun as much as possible (but not too much obviously).  I figure people have survived thousands of years (or millions maybe) without vitamin supplements, so I'm hoping eating a good diet with a lot of variety and getting sunshine are enough.  I don't like vitamins at all and will stop taking them myself once I'm done breastfeeding.  We are in the south though where there is plenty of warm weather and sunshine, so we are in a better position to get vitamin D naturally.

This. Our pedi gave us the option of poly, tri or d ... And then he informed us that the tri is by far the best tasting :-) We decided to trust his judgement and our ds has never had a problem taking it and actually seems to enjoy it--putting his fingers in his mouth right after to suck on... to extend the flavor perhaps :-D

  • Thank you all for the suggestions. I was getting really frustrated with it. I'll definitely look into the Carlsons and tri vi sol as well!
