Natural Birth

Anyone in the Dothan, AL area?

We are currently stationed in the Pacific Northwest but very recently found out that we may be moving to Fort Rucker. I know Alabama is not a midwife friendly state, which is what I'm currently seeing, and the birth climate down there seems to be totally different. Just wondering if any of you will be delivering in the area. I'm trying to learn more about the options down there. Thanks ladies!

Re: Anyone in the Dothan, AL area?

  • I'm not in Dothan but AL is definitely not the easiest place to do natural birth.

Dothan is fairly close to the GA and FL lines if you want to consider driving to more MW friendly states. It may screw with insurance coverage but it's something to consider.

If not I'd highly recommend hiring a Doula and doing a lot of research on the hospital you are considering and the OB you are looking at. See if you can find some local natural birth mamas and ask about their providers and hospitals and how it went.

    Good Luck!

  • Thanks, hope.  I've already contacted a doula and am waiting to hear back from her.

  • Alabama has very strict laws against home birth, if that's what you're thinking.  Not sure about birthing centers and NB friendly hospitals though... but Dothan is in S. Alabama, and from what I've seen (I've been there several times) it's probably not very "hippie" friendly (not that NB is hippie, persay, but you get what I mean).

I'm in Georgia, and home birth is highly frowned upon here as well, although the laws are not as strict as Alabama.  And I believe (not sure, so you might want to research) that there are no free-standing birth centers in Georgia.  You'd also be driving into south Georgia, which I doubt is much better than south Alabama.  Atlanta would be your best bet, but that's at least 4-5 hours away.

I have no idea about Florida, but I know Dothan is very close to Panama City.

  • I'm not interested in a home birth but am hoping to find an OB/GYN that is more open to the idea of a natural birth, limited interventions, no episiotomy, etc.

There is a free standing birth center in Savannah, none in Atlanta, but there will be one in Atlanta in 2013, hopefully, Atlanta Birth Center. There are 2 all midwifery practices in Atlanta, but I would only recommend 1.
