Sorry ladies, I had a very busy few days at work followed by an incredibly attached baby and I was unable to respond sooner. Thanks for the advice The routine and bedtime advice is something I had not previously attempted with any strictness. DH has been reluctant to settle into a bedtime routine. From what he's said, this comes from his feelings of wanting be "allowed" his own parenting style on nights when he puts LO to bed, and his "go-with-the-flow" attitude toward most things in life. DH is very "go with the flow". That's one of the things that attracted me to marry him. Helps me stop and smell the roses, so to speak But as I told him last night: "We've been going with the flow, and he's still waking up every 2 hours or less most nights. And he still won't go to bed for you at least half the nights I'm gone. Maybe this is just the way its going to be, but wouldn't it at least be worth trying a routine?" That said, all our routine involves is getting him changed and reading him the same book before bed every night. 1-2x a week we precede that by a bath or shower with mommy. Really, not much to it DH doesn't like reading aloud - he sounds very awkward lol - he reads really fast and messes up words. His brain is too fast for his mouth. Of course I can't tell him to slow down, as I don't want to hurt his pride :P (tangent!) Also, he's wicked proud because LO tends to fall asleep well while watching Top Gear (a british car show). He likes to brag about it to all the guys and therefore, that is usually his "last resort" get the baby to sleep method. I don't like the TV thing, but it definitely works and at this point its just the lights and colors.Last night, DH finally agreed to doing this simple routine and trying to slowly cut the bedtime back to 7:30. Of course, last night we failed miserably and he wasn't in bed until 10:30. I brought him out in the jogging stroller at 4 and he took a 2 hour nap during the jog. Then he wasn't tired at bedtime! Not to mention he just had his 4 month shots yesterday and he was incredibly fussy and just wanted to be held by momma. So, all that is to say that we're going to try a routine and an earlier bedtime. We accepted a long time ago that this may just be the way LO is - BF digests quickly and he's measuring in the 85th percentile for size all around so he also may have a more frequent need for food. DH's family is all like that - long, lean, and big eaters. Even still, we have to keep the men in his family fed (DH, BIL, and FIL) or else they very easily get what we call "Hangry" - hunger angry :P I even bring a granola bar in my purse everywhere just incase. HAH! DH IS JUST A BIG CHILD!Sorry about all the extra information - hope someone finds it entertaining!

Smilelari, also, someone on the AP board suggested this book "Three in a Bed" by Deborah Jackson. Just started it this AM - really loving it so far. Sounds like something you might appreciate!

I've never heard of that book. Thanks for the rec. I'll check it out!
You guys will figure it out. It's important that you both be able to put kiddo to bed especially with your schedule. Keep at it and you'll get it down!

I'm totally with your DH on hating routine. I've never been one of those people who has any sort of routine or consistency in their day. However, it's obvious that DD really needs it and it makes life so much easier on everyone!
When we started her on an earlier bedtime it only took a few nights before she got used to it. Good luck!
I was like your dh for the longest time. He will eat when he wants, why not sleep the same way? Then I saw that a bedtime routine helped ds sleep better and I was sold.
good luck!
ps are you from new england? you said "wicked" I am from Massachusetts

Good luck with the whole routine thing. We are working on it, too...we have been "winging" it for awhile now and it's working sporadically. You can be our inspiration! Keep us posted. I'm glad your DH is on board. :-)

Today LO napped from 230-5. so, I Started the routine at 730 ... Bath, books, nursing...I just got him up because at 855 he was lying there eyes wide open, kicking and making cute fun baby noises. The late nap killed us again, but I didn't want to wakehim from it! Would you just make him lay there in the dark? From what have read, if a baby is not tired there is nothing we can do to make them fall asleep. Right now I got him up and we are spending low key awake time for half an hour, then I'll try again (unless I see sleepy cues earlier ...

This is going to sound totally backwards but...
2:30-5 is not actually a late nap and max awake time for a 5 month old is still about 2 hours. So, if nap ends at 5, he should be asleep again by 7 (not starting the routine, actually asleep so routine needs to start about 6:30). It's entirely possible he's up again at 9 because he's overtired.

Re: *smilelari* f/u on frequent night waking post
"Hangry"-I love it! I'm totally going to steal this word and start using it.
My DH is a big child too...you are not alone.
Hope the new routine works!
