Toddler dies in washing machine accident

This is so tragic.  I have to say that the story doesn't seem to add up.

Re: Toddler dies in washing machine accident

  • I read about this last night. Really, really sad.

Why do you not think it adds up? The only weird thing about it to me is the mother said she always leaves the washing machine lid open. Isn't it supposed to be closed to run?

  • Most top load washing machines will fill up but not swish the clothes when the lid is open.  This is sad article to read.
  • The URL won't work for me. Did the child climb in after the water was in there? That is entirely plausible.

Actually mine will run with the top open but it wont spin.  I don't know maybe I just think she was being negligent.

I think she probably just didn't think about the possibility, which is sad. I don't know that I would have either, unless I knew my kid was a climber. I used to leave the lid open while it was filling up while I gathered more clothes, or leave it open when I wanted stuff to soak and not agitate.

  • We have an older washer like Pre 1995 or something and it will go thorugh a full cycle with the lid open. The good thing is its in a separate room and the only way to get in there is by unlocking the dead bolt. There is no handle or knob. It's really sad but I don't think I would ever intentionally leave the lid up knowing I have a toddler running around that would have access to the space. JMO.

  • I thought the same thing. The video said that she was reading a magazine in the other room and didn't notice her son had gone off.  Plus, it is very odd that she "traditionally washed the clothes with the lid open".  It is a very sad story, which also points out that toddlers get into EVERYTHING.
