Fail 1Hr GTT and Pass 3 hr GTT?

Okay, I know that are some of us that get panicky about this... myself included.

I failed my 1 hr by 1 point. DANG IT. I feel like a big fat failure, but it is what it is.

Anyway, I was wondering if those who failed the 1 hr GTT were able to pass the 3 hour? I am taking it tomorrow... Maybe I'm not educated enough on how my blood breaks down sugar to understand why I failed exactly.

I also apparantly have low iron and need to take the iron supplement. Have any of you found this causes serious constipation? I just want to make sure I'm as prepared as possible.

Thanks for your insight and reassurance on this stuff!

  • My OB's office 1 hour GTT cut off rate is 129. I failed with a 149. Took the 3 hour test and passed with "flying colors". Try to relax and not worry too much. If you failed by 1 point, then I would guess you should be fine.

  • I failed the 1 hr by 11 pts and passed the 3 hr.  I had passed the 1 hr with my first pregnancy, so I was thrown off by failing it this time. I bet at only 1 pt over that you'll be fine for the 3 hr.

  • I had a 138 with my 1 hour.  They said the cut off was 130.

I passed my 3 hour with results "well within the normal ranges".  I had half a peanut butter sandwich at exactly 12 hours before my test AND waiting in the car when I got out of the test.

I was also found to be deficient in iron.  I was at 11.1, and they wanted me at 12.  They said iron supplements can cause constipation, but I eat prunes everyday so it hasn't been a problem.

  • We are in the same boat!  I failed my 1 hour and also have to take an iron supplement.  I have taken iron supplements before with no constipation.  But, with being pregnant I am not sure how my body is going to handle it.  My dr. said to make sure to eat lots of fruits and vegtables and that should help with constipation.

  • I majorly failed my 1 hr and then technically passed my 3 hr, but since they were on the high end my doc is still a little concerned, so I will be testing 4 times a day for a week, and then 2 times a day for a week and if all is normal then I don't have to test anymore. She also wants me to speak with a diabetic nutritionist so that I don't have to test.

It sucks, but it isn't just about how your body is breaking down the sugar, it is that the placenta is having to process all of it and if it isn't kept in check then baby can have a blood sugar crash at birth.

I also have low iron. If you take a colate with it everyday it should help with any constipation (additional fiber via fiber one bars--which are actually good, and berries should help--raspberries have 8 grams of fiber per serving and are also really good for you).

    GL!

  • I failed my 1 hour test and just barely passed my three hour. However, my numbers were so close on the 3 hour that my doctor wants me to follow the diet anyways. I was only like one number away from failing. I also had low iron. At first the meds didn't really phase me, but now the constipation is worse than ever. Make sure you invest in a stool softener.

  • I know when I took my 1 hr,  I barely failed.  but passed the 3 hour with no problem!  I am sure you are going to be fine!  I wouldn't stress out about it too much.

I have to take iron supplements as well.  Dr had suggested I take them, since I was complaining that my energy level was down, not b/c of my iron levels when they tested.  He said it was good to take it, plus with being a red head.  I am not sure what being a red head has to do with my iron levels???  but haven't had too much problems with constipation.

  • I failed the 1 hr with a 188 yikes! Over 200 I think they dont even have you do the 3 hour just planning as if you have GD I was so close to the cut off.. and I fasted for both tests not sure what happened..... they had me to do the 3 hour and i passed no problem ...... so you can do it .. good luck!
  • I failed my first one and passed the three hour one perfectly. They also said I have low iron but said to make sure you pair foods that are high in iron with foods high in vitamin c. I guess vitamin c helps your body absorb the iron. This may be a better way that an iron supplement and constipation.

  • I actually just saw had a GD class today b/c I was just diagnosed.  The one thing I can tell you is that there is NOTHING you did wrong that caused you to have it.  Women all of all shapes, sizes, fitness levels get diabetes.  I am fairly healthy, maintain my weight, get exercise, eat well, and have no family history and I still ended up with GD.  It's all about the way your body breaks down (or doesn't) glucose.  I feel very empowered after taking this class and the "diet" isn't that bad.  You can pretty much eat what you want as long as you spread your carbs out during the day.  I PROMISE it will be okay!
