Breast Pumps

I know this has been mentioned a lot in the past but instead of looking back I'm just going to ask again.  For those breast feeding, what kind of pump are you planning on getting?  I feel like I"m totally lost on what to get.  I'm not sure if it makes much of a difference but I'm going to be using Playtex bottles.....

Re: Breast Pumps

  • I registered for the Medela Pump In Style double electric pump. But I plan to first rent one from the hospital in case for some reason I am unable to breastfeed/pump and if that happens I will return the pump (I won't be opening it until I'm sure I can breastfeed).

  • My insurance covers 80% of the cost of a pump. A rep will be at the hospital to show me a few and test out. Then I choose which one I want.

  • I registered for a Medela Freestyle and luckily- my insurance company is going to be covering 100% of it!!  I have heard it is a great brand.

  • I have a Medela (pump in style?).  I would definately get a Medela, electric, double pump.  I have only heard bad things about the other brands and if you get a single, you may leak out of the other breast while pumping and it takes twice as long:)

PP- renting one from the hospital first is a GREAT idea.  But the ones there tend to be more powerful.  I rented the Medela Symphony and it was great, but cost almost 3000 dollars if I wanted to buy it retail.  Adjusting to a less powerful pump wasn't too bad but I definately noticed a difference in my supply.

  • I have a Medela Freestyle that I love.  I really liked being able to pump on the go. It was great for multitasking around the house too.

  • I got an Ameda Purely Yours for 2 reasons:

1.I got the complete kit that normally sells for around $250 for $150 with a Military discount....my insurance doesn't cover a BP so I had to buy it myself.

2.An Ameda Purely Yours is a Closed system so not only it is more sanitary after I'm done having kids and not using it anymore I can sell it to someone else.  I personally would never buy a used open system because the milk can get into parts of pump that you can't replace.

  • Everything I've read (reviews, etc.) has said Medelas are the best, so thats what I'll be getting.

  • I highly recommend waiting until baby is born and seeing what you will need.  You may find that you are going to breastfeed 95% of the time, so it's not worth investing big bucks. then again you may find baby has problems latching on and have to pump a lot.  Consider too if you are going back to work and how much you will be pumping and for how long. If you are planning to pump a lot, consider just renting.

also, I say "planning" but realize you can plan all you want, but things can change... I learnt this pretty quick when my LO came 15 weeks early and now I'm a slave to the pump since he can't bottle or breastfeed yet and atleast for another 6 weeks....

  • I have a Medela Swing pump and I really like it. I like the fact that if you have to go battery powered, the suction is still great. I've found other electric models really let you down in the suction area when you use the battery-powered option.

  • I have the Medela Freestyle.  The only issue I had with a full year of use was a battery glitch - just had to drain the battery fully and recharge.

The type of bottle you want to use with LO doesn't matter at all. Most likely, you'll pump into the Medela bottles and transfer to the real bottles from there.  Or freeze it in bags, for use later.  I would usually pump 2-3 days worth into the bottles it comes with and leave those in the fridge until I had the right amount to put in freezer bags.
