VBAC

VBAC and induction

So when I had my first I wouldn't go into labor, even with an induction (I was overdue, too).  So my fear is that when I get pregnant again and attempt a VBAC, that I won't go into labor.  I know the risk of a uterine rupture is higher if induced for a VBAC.  I'm curious if anyone was induced and what your experience was?  TIA

Re: VBAC and induction

  • I was induced with pit and had a successful VBAC.  The "increase" in rupture is really small and they induce more slowly for a VBAC.  Since I was in the hospital and being monitored I felt completely comfortable.  Also, my CNM was extremely confident in the process.  No issues during delivery at all!

  • Ask your provider what their standards are in terms of VBAC induction. My hospital has a 78% VBAC success rate so I asked about this specifically and was told that depending on the drugs used, the risk of increased uterine rupture is basically a non-issue.
  • I have a scheduled c-section on Tuesday if I don't go into labour on my own by then. My OB asked me yesterday if I wanted to swap it out for an induction with oxytocin. She said it increases the risk of uterine rupture by 0.5-1% so it's not really that much of an increase in risk.
  • The increase in risk due to induction is mostly related to cervical ripening agents. No one will use those on you after a c-section.  Some will use a little pitocin if you've made progress on your own, because that's generally considered safe by those who support VBACs.  But, you definitely won't have the complete induction experience you probably had the first time around.

I'm in the exact same boat as you...so here's to hoping nature takes its course this time!

  • I was induced with #1 and went into labor naturally with #2.  Doctor said if I would have needed induction, I would have already needed a favorable cervix since they would not use cervical ripening drugs.  He would have used a small dose of pitocin to get everything going.  Luckily I did not need it.

  • I would check with where you are delivering. The hospital I'm delivering at will not use Pit on a VBAC, it's an automatic section. I was induced with my first pregnancy at 41 weeks. So I'm also worried/hopeful that my body will go into labor on it's own.
