So my son is going to be 6 months old next week. He got an ear infection 2 weeks ago and his diapers got extremely mucuousy. Well I had his ped. test one of the diapers yesterday and it had blood in it (not visible to me). Anyways, we started him on alimentum.
I hear that intolerance to milk and soy protein starts to ease up around his age and goes away by a year in a lot of cases. I plan on keeping him on alimentum until they can retest his diaper to make sure it's infact MSPI. Is there anything else I should be doing? We were told to stop solids for 2 weeks before the diaper can be retested. I just feel really guilty that we didn't catch this sooner.
Just looking for some experiences, tips, advise or whatever else you ladies have to share if you have dealt with this.
Thanks!
Re: MSPI moms..please help!
Ditto all of this. We are keeping DD on Nutramigen for a few more months and then will slowly try another formula and have her diapers retested. As for solids, we only introduce 1 a week so that we can watch her closely. For rice cereals, we were told to use Beech Nut & not Gerber. Apparently, Gerber has some milk in it.

Thanks for this. I can't avoid the guilt but I am thankful that he is healthy and happy baby and at least it's caught now. What sucks is that I had this feeling that he was MSPI but the doctors kept saying otherwise. Even yesterday, I forced the ped. to test his diaper.
Regarding solids, I'll def. make my own now. We were giving him gerber but it'd be much better to do my own since I know there'll be no additives. Also, they said if we wanted to feed him cereal, it'd be ok. Do I have to get a specific brand? So far, he has been eating gerber oatmeal.
Glad to hear he is doing better. I plan on calling my insurance (Aetna) to see if alimentum would be covered. Based on your experience, is there anything specific I should state when I call, we are in NJ if that helps.
Thanks.
Just curious as to what solids y'all have done. We have done squash, green beans, carrots, applesauce (he eats daily) and just started sweet potatoes. We had to take a break for now since he has a bad rash on his cheek/chin... pretty sure it's from the ridiculous amount of drool he produces but it made me nervous.
We have done: sweet potatos, peas, carrots, applesauce, bananas & pears.

Okay great to hear that pears were a go. That's next on our list.
Sorry about hijacking the thread ladies!
Try Beech Nut or Earths Best cereal. Gerber contains dairy.
We were denied the first 2 times we tried to have them cover it. They will say no, but you can appeal. We appealed and ultimately won! They are very nice at our insurance company and told us exactly what we needed to get them to cover it.
The main thing you need is a prescription or letter from your dr stating LO HAS to be on this formula. That there is a medical necessity and "regular" formula isn't in his best interest. Our GI dr gets these requests all the times, so they have a generic letter they send out to insurance companies. Is your LO going to a GI dr? If so, they should know what to put down. Otherwise your pedi might not because they aren't too familiar with the process.
All I can say is it took a lot of work and many phone calls. It took them over a month after our last appeal to make a determination. So we were paying out of pocket for that formula in that interim. But they did ultimately cover it 100% and it's such a huge load off our backs! His Neocate is $42 for a 14oz can. He goes through 1 can every 2-3 days. That would really add up! We are in the process of getting the formula we already paid for before their determination cover now...
Good luck! And I wanted to add. Even though we aren't going to start him on regular formula/milk until 1 yr, our GI dr did give us the ok to start yogurt at 7-8 months. We will see how he does and go from there.
