Ladies for those of u who are not ftm or who have done extensive research, does a doula bring with her a variety of natural oils and such things to help you deal with the pain? TIA

Re: Doula tools

  • I am a FTM, but my doula has already told me she will be bringing oils with her to help with pain management. As far as what else she will be bringing, I'm not sure.

  • I'm a FTM but already had my baby.

It depends on your doula. Mine carries a suitcase with massage oil, tennis balls, a sounds machine with everything from frogs to the ocean, she wrote specialized encouragement scripts and guided visualizations based on our conversations, and her camera.

I think she has a lot of other support tools but I ended up just wanting to lay int he bath tub and squeeze my husbands hand.

  • It all depends on the doula.  Many feel that their hands and heart is all they need.  Others bring more with them like rebozos, rolling pins (for back massage) crock pots (keeping compresses warm), herbs/oils, the list can go on for days.

Some certifying org. don't allow their doulas to use oils, herbs, homeopathics.  Others encourage it!  Of course, independent doulas can do what every they want!

If you are just starting your search for a doula, it might be a great idea to ask what she brings in her bag.  When I meet with clients for the second prenatal meeting, I bring my bag and we go through everything that is in there.  I'm willing to add more if they'd like something specific as long as it's ok with the hospital (some will not allow crockpots, for example.)
