bedsharing?

Hi ladies,

Do bedsharing babies snack more?? Let me explain:

DD is 3 weeks old and we've been bedsharing since day 1. It wasnt something I planned on, but we're both so much happier this way :)

During the day DD has lots of wakeful times puncuated by 2-3 hr naps. At night she just sleeps and eats (no wakeful periods) but she's up every hour and sometimes only nursing for 15 mins.

I was wondering if that's because she can smell my milk and it wakes her up, if it's common with bedsharing, or if it's not at all related... does any else experience this?

tia!!

Re: bedsharing?

  • I let my 8 week old son sleep in my bed some nights and he still sleeps his long stretches .. don't forget your daughter is only 3 weeks old, her stomach is tiny and doesn't hold much .. plus breastmilk goes through their system a lot quicker than formula .. so I don't think bedsharing is the problem .. oh, and my son has never nursed longer than 20 mins .. he's a quick eater, I guess .. ? haha .. =] ohh and if you think bedsharing may be the problem, have you tried letting her sleep elsewhere at night .. ?

  • DD sleeps in her PnP for the first stretch 10pm-2am, and in our bed for the second stretch of the night 230am-6ish, and I EBF. I do not think its the bedsharing that is keeping your LO up every hour, more than her age. As PP stated it is normal for your LO to cluster feed/ be up so often at this age. When my DD was around 3 weeks the most she slept at night was 1-3hrs.

  • I occasionally bed share with my LO. She starts out in her pnp and if she wakes up at night I bring her to bed with me - only once in a while do I actually bring her to bed all night with us.

I dont think the actual bed sharing makes her eat more. But with that being said - I do let her comfort nurse while in bed like when she is super cranky. I do it mostly when I am tired bc I know it'll help her get to sleep faster. And when you work 40 plus hours a week I mean anything to get your LO to sleep at night right? So I dont think its the actual bed sharing that makes her nurse more. BC she will sometimes comfort nurse when she is home with me during the day for nap times like now bc she is sick.

  • In the beginning they wake up more, even if you werent bed sharing I am sure they would still wake up every 1-2 hours. DD is now 5 months old and we still bed share and she will sleep 3-5 hours and wake a few times for a quick snack. So it is true bed sharing babies may snack more but I also think its true bed sharing mommys get more sleep because you dont have to get up to feed baby you can (normally) fall right back to sleep.
