Anyone, should I call the Dr. again?

Okay so DS had his hypospadias surgery yesterday.  He has a catheter in and earlier his pee started being dark pink and he had just 2 pin size blood clots, but I called the Dr. anyway.

I called and this is what he said.  It is completely normal for it to be pink, with a few small pieces of a blood clot.  Just get him to drink more than normal and he should be okay.  As long as it isn't cranberry juice or ketchup it is fine.

So fast forward to this evening.  He wakes up, I go to change his diapers and notice it is not only now darker pink but there is also a place in his diaper that is red.  It isn't so much that is saturated the diaper but in the quarter size area that it is, it almost looks like blood smeared on the surface of the diaper.

If it was one of you, would you call the Dr. again, take him in to the hospital, wait til tomorrow and if it looks the same call to see if we can get into the Dr. to just check, or just not worry about it unless it gets worse?

I just know that they can sometimes have bladder spasms, and I can not for the life of me remember what the nurse said about them.  I feel like it is a major mommy fail but with all the info that was given that is the one thing I don't remember what she said, do this or don't worry about this sort of information.

Thank you ladies so much I just don't want to bug the Dr., run off the hospital, or not worry and it end up being something bad.

  • I would call the Dr. just to be on the safe side, if its nothing the Dr. will get over it and you will feel better. But if something is wrong you will be glad you called.

  • I would call.  But, then again, I'm one of those "call just to make myself feel better even if the nurses laugh at me when they hang up the phone" kind of people.  It's worth the peace of mind, especially since your DS just had surgery.

  • I convinced DH to call.  The Dr. said it is normal and we can expect some pure blood spots, but it's when it is flowing blood or if a it stops draining and is clogged that we should be concerned.  Thank you ladies so much!!!

  • How has your little guy been feeling?  Have the meds kicked in for pain?  How are you with all of this?

I'm glad you called. I think it's always better to call and find out than worry and possibly miss something.
