C-sections

Staples or Stitches?

So I had hear horror stories with Staples so I opted for Stitches during my last csection.  Everything seemed fine and it wasn't a big deal.  I asked my new OB about her opinion and she said she liked the staples better because they itched less.  I had a TON of itching with my c/s last time.  What are your thoughts?  Any experience you care to share?  Any reason you chose one over the other?

I wasn't given a choice and my OB used dermabond.   No itching at all!  My scar looks great too.   It's just a pale line.

  • I had staples and got an infection 2 days after they were removed.  I know this is not typical, but because of the infection my scar has always been pretty bad.

  • I had internal stitches and external staples.  I actually had an allergic reaction to the stitches.  Did great with the staples.  No problem at all and no itching.  Scar is barely noticeable.  I can feel a lot of internal scar tissue from where I had the allergic reaction but from the outside you can't tell.  My OB said it wouldn't be an issue with future pregnancies/C-sections either

I had staples I healed great and my scar looks fantastic - it's hardly noticeable!

  • I had staples and they were great. Healed quickly, not itchy, and I only have a so-faint-you-can-hardly-see-it thin white scar. I was shocked to find out they had stapled me instead of stiched me (I didn't even know staples were something they would use) but I have no regrets.

  • I had stitches and plan to ask for them this time around. My concern is with the steri strips. I had an allergic reaction to the adhesive on the strips and had lots of blisters from it. Not really sure if there is anything I can do about it.
  • i didn't have a choice, but i had a vertical incision on the outside and i had staples.  22 of them and not one problem.

  • I didn't have a choice. My OB did internal stitches and external glue.
  • I had subcutaneous sutures and I had no itching!
  • I had staples that were taken out at 48hrs before we left the hospital to go home. I didn't have any issues with mine (not even itching) and my scar is barely visible. My new OB had trouble finding it even lol.
  • I had staples the first time and stiches the second time.

The stitches were soooooo much better for me.  The first time I was so itchy and in so much pain where the staples were..but the stitches were so much better!  It was much, much better for me and I healed great.

I wasn't given a choice either. I had staples for 1 week, and then dermabond + steri-strips that fell off on their own a couple weeks later. I had no itching at all!

My scar is barely visible like PP said, just a pale line.

  • With my 1st I had stitches. I had my son at 3:10 am and everyone I talked to said I was "lucky" that I got stitches because at that time most people got staples.  My ob said that it didn't matter what time you delivered (am/pm) she used stitches as she liked them better.

When we were scheduling my 2nd cs I talked w/ my ob about stitches again. She said that everyone (at my hospital) now gets stitches unless there was some reason that they "might" need staples. They also use a glue bonding agent (can't remember the name now) w/ all stitches. So need need for steri strips or extra gauze. I wish I could have had that the first time around.

    I didn't have any issues w/ mine.

  • My doctor had to talk me in to Staples because I was terrified of them.  He kept telling me that staples heal better and that he would do internal stitiches and external staples.

I trusted him and he ended up being right (hate it when that happens! Smile

Had the staples for a week, never noticed them and you can't really even tell that I have a scar at all.

  • I had stitches and no itching.  That may be because it was so numb I couldn't feel any itching.  Really I think itching = healing so I wouldn't worry.  I just can't imagine as sore as I was weeks after the c/s having someone prying staples out the next week.  Owie.  Dissolving stitches are just one less thing to worry about imo.

  • Staples that were taking out a week later! My scar looks great!
  • I had staples.  I was terrified that they would hurt when removed but I really had no issues with them at all.  I wasn't given a choice, but if I had a choice in the future I'd opt for staples.  I don't remember any itching.
  • My OB asked me going in to my emergency C if I had a preference which I thought was awesome since I had researched it but it was the last thing on my mind at the time. I opted for stitches.

  • I had surgical glue with my c-section. The best thing ever! No removal of anything (which, to me, is VERY uncomfortable). It didn't itch or get irritated. No bandages or ointments. It was the best and I highly recommend it.
