DS2 is 4.5 months. Pedi diagnosed MSPI around 3-4 weeks old. I stopped BFing then. He was on Nutramigen for about 2 weeks and the blood in his stool and the constant crying began again. So, since about 2 months old he's been on EleCare. He's doing well, gaining weight (90%), and happy. He is also on Prevacid for his reflux.
However, there is still mucus in his poo an he spits up around the clock (no matter how long it's been since he last ate. Pedi is concerned about slow digestion and wants us to see the GI. At his 4 month appt she put him on Reglan to help speed up the emptying of his stomach. It hasn't helped.
I was just wondering if anyone can give some insight to what might happen at the first appt. I'm assuming it will just be a consult, right?
Ive put it off as long as possible. I really don't want to put him through unecessary procedures but I also don't want an underlying issue to go undiagnosed.
Thanks!
Re: What should we expect at first GI appt?
Our first appointment was essentially a consultation, as PP said... i.e., symptoms, family history, etc and brief examination. Food and meds were adjusted (at the time, Elecare and Prevacid for us) and we scheduled a 3 week follow up. At the follow up, she was still displaying a lot of the same symptoms (mucus in poop, spitting up, crying during feeds), so the GI scheduled an upper GI & abdominal ultrasound.
Other than the display of severe reflux, the tests came back normal and I felt reassured that there wasn't something else going on. FWIW - we switched to Neocate from Elecare (the composition is slightly different, a SMALL number of children tolerate one better than the other) and the mucus is gone. Might be worth asking about.
Hopefully a the GI will have another perspective and your baby feels better soon!
