A woke up from a nap on Saturday with a fever and a cough and has been miserable ever since. He saw the pedi yesterday and they said it was just a cold. His fever is still present today and he has a rash all over his chest, neck, and back. I called the pedi and they said the rash was "just part of the cold" but he is so completely miserable, I'm thinking it's more than just a cold.
He is not eating or drinking at all (he had a wet diaper first thing in the morning and one around 11 but that's it all day), sleepy to the point of lethargy, and I can't get his fever down under 100 with Tylenol and Motrin at the same time. He is coughing so hard that he is gagging and vomiting, and he is acting like he is in pain every time we touch him, but he wants to be held nonstop.
It's not like any cold I've ever had, but it's his first "major" illness so I don't know if I'm overreacting or if I should be concerned. The medical assistant told me to call first thing in the morning if he still had a fever or rash. I had a minor breakdown earlier because this kid has never cried for longer than 10 minutes in his life and he hasn't stopped screaming for nearly 4 days. Would you take him to urgent care tonight or just ride out the night and see how he is in the morning?
Re: Rash with fever/cough - WWYD
My baby just went through a very similar bug - high fever for a couple of days, a bit of a cough and the rash. The rash came a couple of days after she seemed to be on the up-swing and our doctor said that the rash was the result of her body fighting the infection - I think he described it as a reaction to the body fighting off the infection with a high release of histamine. She was pretty grumpy for a few days, which was really unlike her too, so I understand what you mean!
I would ride it out - sounds like our babies had a similar bug. Good luck!
Did the rash appear as the fever was dying out? If so, could be Roseola. We just went through this last week. It took almost 5 days for all fever and rash to disappear.
ETA: I re read and saw that the fever is still there. I would give them another call in the morning. I tend to keep calling until I know we are on the way to recovery and/or have a good explanation.
