High-Risk Pregnancy

How many lovenox shots have you done?

While doing one of my twice daily Lovenox shots the other day I was trying to add up in my head just how many I've done over the years and it sort of stunned me.  I did them for a few weeks after I had my DVT and then with all subsequent cycles of ttc and subsequesnt pregnancies, this being my fourth since the DVT.  In total, I'm guessing I've done over 1,500 injections.

So come on ladies, what are your totals?

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I just came to this board to see about others who are on Lovenox, and this was at the top! Great timing! I just got discharged from the hospital last night after having my first DVT (oh joy!) and get to continue Lovenox injections at 120mg once/day for the duration of this pregnancy - also my first. I did my first injection by myself today.

I hope you don't mind if I ask a question while I'm here... My midwife mentioned I might have to switch to Heparin at 36 weeks, then be taken off at 39 weeks and induced after a 24-48 hour anticoagulant-free window. Has anyone else gone through this? I was hoping for natural birth and now I'm pretty down that I'll have to be induced. :(

    - Most every women that is on lovenox will be switched to Heparin at the end of their pregnancy. And most will be induced. Sorry to say that because I know you were wanting to have a natural birth. The reason behind it all is that if you needed to get an epirdural, i.e. because the pain gets to bad or you need to have an emergancy c-section then it is safe to get one. If you are on lovenox until the end there is a higher risk of not being able to walk again or getting a blood clot in your brain or spinal cord because of the lovenox. And they want you to be on something until the end. So Heparin is the next best choice because it lowers all of those chances. But they do want you off of it for 24hours because there are risks involved while still being on it while in labor/delivery. Even though you will probally be induced you can still opt for not pain meds and do everythng you can do natural. Hope that helps some. Always talk to your doctor about it and tell him/her what you are feeling and maybe they can help explain things better for you and help you out. Happy pregnancy to you!!

I guess you could always ask for a second opinion. My OB had me do a pre-conception consult with an MFM to discuss how we'd handle the Lovenox and I was told that they've moved away from inducing. I'll still switch to Heparin at 35-36 weeks but barring some other reason for induction they'll just wait for me to go into labor on my own.
