Let's talk production...

Anyone else having trouble meeting the feeding demands of their little one??  Mine wants so much more than I can provide..trying to pump to stimulate more, but I am getting frustrated as she has required formula supplementation already.  Any advice? TIA!

  • keep feeding at breast constantly and when she refuses pump after that. Milk can take awhile to come in

  • I would check out kellymom.com or workingandpumping.com, both have advice on supplementation.

I tend to pump right after I feed in the morning, if he gets a bottle, and before I go to bed because DH gives a bottle so I can get some sleep.  I noticed a little dip in supply, so I only nursed for a few days, all on demand and for as long as he wanted to. I also added a pumping session and pumped longer than I had been from 10 to 20 minutes.  It came back up in a few days.  They also say to eat oatmeal or drink dark beer, to help boost supply.

    Good luck!

  • The nurse that came by yesterday for my home visit told me that your milk can take upwards of 2 weeks to fully come in... and then it doesn't stabilize until 8-12 weeks pp.  Keep stimulating your breasts, they will hopefully catch up soon
  • I was having the same issue, and LO was not gaining any weight.  It all became too stressful for me. Plus by the time I BF, pumped and gave bottle, then cleaned all of the equipment and changed LO, I had 20 minutes before starting over again.  Do not feel bad if you are unable to continue this routine.  My baby is much happier with a full tummy and I'm much less stressed knowing that he is gaining weight!!  Depending on how long you plan to breastfeed, (ie: if you are heading back to a demanding job that likely wont support your supply, like I am), it may not be worth all this.  Only you know what is best for you and your new LO.  Good Luck!!

  • Have you tried taking fenugreek? It's an herbal supplement recommended to me by a lactation consultant. It's really helped. In addition to what others have said, keep pumping, drink lots of fluids, try to relax and get some fenugreek. You'll get there....Try to stay positive. It's do hard...my little guy was premature so I have had to really work hard to get my milk production to increase but it's been totally worth it. Good luck!!!

Me too, and I have taken the herbs AND my placenta as well.  But my pedi pointed out that I can still comfort nurse for bonding and she'll still be getting little bits of breastmilk.  I'm still pumping for now, but I think I'm going to save my sanity and back off on it.

Either way, as long as baby is getting fed, you're golden.  I genuinely hope you can get your supply up, but if not there are several of us who have made the decision to stop when it became more stress than good.

  • I am on the verge of giving up pumping altogether.  My supply has sucked from the beginning and I've done everything my LC has told me to do in an attempt to up my supply. It's way too stressful to pump for 25-30 minutes on both sides and maybe get 1oz.

If giving your baby breastmilk is important to you, give it your best shot.  Your baby is still young and your supply is still building.  GL!
