Not me. I gave up on it about the time that I realized that people who do far worse things than me have healthy babies. I don't think a ham sandwich is really an issue.

heck no i'm not. Also I just couldn't give up my runny eggs benny. I don't think deli meats or runny eggs are going to be the the deciding factor if my baby will be healthy or not.
The ONLY reason i have given up on deli meat is because my doctor is very laid back with everything, he says drink as much caffeine as you want, he told me stress wont hurt the baby (women survived the holocaust pregnant) he says exercise is fine, but the one thing he is pretty strict about is heating deli meat until steaming. That is why I said I can't wait for a "cold" deli sandwich. Don't get me wrong I have eaten it several times warmed up and a couple times cold. I just can't wait to eat it with no guilt.
Plus I have a lot of health issues (high risk pregnancy) so I feel like I have already stacked so much against my little guy I don't want to chance anything. So roll your eyes all you want, just how I feel at the moment.

I really can't stand deli meat... so I am using it to my full advantage for the full 9 months... although sometimes I really really really want a cold cut trio at Subway... its like the one craving that has me going what? Really body you want one of those... then our cover will be blown... must not reach into temptation! lol... I stay away from like everthing... we are supposed too... I figure it helps with the fact sometimes I forget my prenantal...
Well, the hospital just served me a cold roast beef sandwich in the antepartum wing so it can't be that dangerous . It wasn't good unfortunately but they like to starve me here so I didn't complain as I wolfed it down, hehe.

No judgement here. I was just curious as to whether people were still doing this. I remember there being a big debate about it when I was pregnant with DS, but a lot has changed in 3 years. I haven't seen anyone mention it during this entire pregnancy. That's why I was surprised to see it in your post.

I avoided it during the 1st tri, but as soon as 2nd tri hit (or maybe a week or two before) I've been having it every time I crave it (once every other week or so).

I haven't had it either. If my doctor says no to something, I tend to follow his instructions.
Yeah, I am. My Doctor isn't strict and she specifically said to stay away from it. After a miscarriage (which had nothing to do with deli meat!) I'll do whatever I can to make sure if something DOES happen, I won't be blaming myself.
Yup, I am. When I was pregnant with DS, all those people up here died from listeria from deli meat and I just can't bring myself to eat it. I have been extremely lax this pregnancy, but that is the one thing I just can't get over.

Unless you've also given up canteloupe, celery, jalapenos, sprouts and all the other fruits and vegetables that have in the past and could possibly come in contact with animal feces, then the listeria argument doesn't hold water. 22 people died from deli meat in Canada....30 died in the midwest US from canteloupe. It's just dumb luck what food will be next.
If you're avoiding deli meat because of the nitrates and high sodium....more power to you.

I'm avoiding it. My doctor said no to all deli meat unless you steam it before heating. That sounds absolutely gross to me, so I just don't eat it at all. I also don't touch caffeine and alcohol right now.
I'm not lax at all during pregnancy. I'm pretty strict on myself. I had a prior miscarriage at 12 weeks and I'm not going to risk anything. But that's my own doing.

Eh, like I said, it's just something I can't get over for whatever reason in my mind. I know it's illogical, but I don't really care. It's my issue, so I don't eat it. Doesn't mean other people can't and I'm not judging them for it. I answered for me and if my reason "doesn't hold water" in your mind, that's fine, it does for me.
I'm avoiding deli meat as well; there's no telling how recently the slicers have been cleaned or if clerks at the counter have been washing their hands or changing their gloves. I've worked at a few delis before, and some people are WAY too lax about food safety.
I've also been relatviely strict about other foods too - no caffine (not even one cup in the morning, although I know that it's generally considered safe to do so), no unpasturized cheeses or juices, no alcohol, no fish, etc. Just my own personal choices.
I've tried to steam it if I'm going to eat it, but generally avoid it. I had a ham sandwich a while ago, as my work caters our lunches and Monday is always sandwich day, and I felt pretty guilty about it. Dh and I went to Subway the other day and he insisted I get a hot sandwich. I figure I don't NEED it right now, so I might as well avoid it.
I'm avoiding deli meat, because it is disgusting. Didn't like it before pregnancy, no sacrifice here. I work with different meat packers/processors and I think it is with good merit that they recommend not eating deli meat after what I have seen.

My doc says no. My husband runs a deli. He looked at my sideways when I told him. Oh well. I am not a big fan....so its ok. And my doc says its ok as long as it has been steamed to a certain temp.
If I really crave one I would have it but other than that, I avoid it. If I have a choice between deli meat and something else I would ordinarily choose the something else anyway.
I've had no problems leaving deli meat alone. I'm not a fan anyway. I will admit I have been really tempted to eat cookie dough, which is probably far worse - but I've resisted. Mmmmm..... cookie dough. I thought about making a batch without eggs, but it would be dangerous. I could eat the entire bowl in one sitting.
I dont like deli meat. Its too salty for me. I've taken hot dogs and deli meat out of my diet due to nitrates. My body doesn't need them regularly, and baby certainly doesn't need them!
Had the best turkey and swiss sandwich ever earlier for dinner. Besides, wasn't it cooked previously in the process of making it available for lunch meat? It's not like they just pluck the feathers from the bird, or skin the cow, put it out of it's misery, and then slice it up right then and there and serve it on a slice of bread.
I am. It's the only thing my doctor told me not to eat, and while I love a cold turkey sandwich, it's not that huge of a deal for me to not eat it for 9 months. I know there are other risks from other things also, but I figure for how laid back my doctor is, I'll listen to her on this one. I also wash my fresh fruits and veggies REALLY REALLY well before I eat them. But I always did that before...

My husband inspects farms, food processing and packing plants regularly. The things he's seen would rule out eating most food. One of the largest processed meat producers in the US is one of his customers...and they are one of his cleanest customers. He also has some organic food producers who are nasty. The food supply chain is has nasty people and irresponsible owners at all levels. It doesn't always fall cleanly into categories.

I have not been eating it because I don't care for cold cuts that much. I have however been digging into the feta (which is pasteurized so zero issues - but that has not stopped nosy people from commenting).

You are absolutely correct, I wasn't talking so much about the cleanliness but instead what goes into the process. I would also agree with your comment about organic farms, some are absolutely disgusting.

I have not been avoiding it because I am pregnant but more before I do not like the taste of it right now. My usual lunch before I got pregnant was a turkey and cheese sandwich. Now I do PB&J

Running Blog
Im a manager of a Deli. Ive read alot about listeriosis and all that jazz.
I munch on it at work all the time, there are much much worse things than a slice of ham.
The only time I have deli meat is when I have it on a Subway sub.
& even then, I was having them heat the bacon & turkey together. But I got tired of getting strange looks.

About half-way through this post I got up and made a bologna sandwich... for breakfast. YUM!
