Vent - childcare frusterations

My DH is a police sergeant and has been in this area for almost 16yrs. I have been interviewing nannies and daycares for our son, but this is a small town, so my options are already limited. He has shot-down two nannies and a daycare because there are people living near or next door who are "trouble". Now, I am also concerned for the safety of our son, and when he says "trouble" a lot of it is drugs and one neighbor of a nanny was arrested for murder...so I don't begrudge him doing due diligence. But I'm running out of options fast. We're down to one last nanny or else I have to go with a daycare facility I was less than thrilled with.

  • I'm sorry that your having problems with finding childcare. I was watching undercover boss last night and there was a company that offered in home child care. I think it was mostly for military families but it couldn't hurt to check into. It was called Bright Star if I'm remembering correctly. From what I watch the child care providers were really good. I would think about hiring them if I need to. I wish you luck with your search.

  • Sometimes having the inside track is not the best way to live.  My DH is in pest control, so I hear all the roach, rat, bed bug and mouse stories I can take.  It's so disappointing to be craving a certain food item, only to be told what's going on in the kitchen.  Sometimes, you'd rather not know.

Good luck finding childcare.  I guess you have to decide how near is too near.  My DD's daycare is right next to a not-so-nice apartment complex.  I'm sure there are drug users and other sorts living there.  But, I have to I trust that her daycare has appropriate security and procedures.

  • I had a nanny growing up and she always came to the house, helped with the housekeeping, and usually made dinner. Is it an option to have them come to your home?

It would be if it weren't so expensive. I doubt we could find someone full-time for $100-150 a week which is what we're looking at.
