Let's talk about bottles

Reese has major gas issues so I'm trying different things to help. Pretty much from the beginning we've been using Avent bottles so we have tons of them. I had some Born Free bottles that someone bought us that are suppose to help with gas, with those I haven't noticed anything different from the Avent bottles. I bought some Dr. Brown bottles yesterday to try and the do seem to help a little. My concern with the Dr. Brown bottles is that LO sucks the entire nipple in to her mouth, all the way to the collar. Granted, they are small nipples - but I don't know if this is an issue. She is used to the wide neck bottles. I know Dr. Browns makes wide neck bottles but I want to get some preemie nipples (which are only available for the standard bottles) because she still chokes with the level 1 nipples of all the bottles. So I guess I'm wondering what bottles you guys are using, if you're having gas issues or choking issues. Just give me all the deets on your bottles :)

Re: Let's talk about bottles

  • We use the Dr. Brown's and Mason puts the entire nipple in his mouth too. It doesn't seem to cause him any problems, only when he forgets what he is doing! We are also on level 2 nipples because level 1 made him fall asleep while eating because it would take so long for him to finish a bottle and he collapsed them all the time. He has gas too but it doesn't seem to bother him too much once he passes it.

Not sure I'm much help but that's what we use!

  • We use the NUK bottles. She has very little if not no gas issues at all. I love that they have an orthodontic nipple. The bottles also have a little cover that goes between the collar/nipple and the bottle for storage. It prevents leaks and helps with mixing if you are using formula. She has no problems with them at all. (They don't have a preemie nipple that I've found. My LO doesn't have any trouble with the slow flow at all)

  • We use Dr. Browns, and that is normal.

  • Maybe you could try Tommee Tippee. They have an anti-colic valve that is supposed to reduce air.

  • P will randomly cry - either gas or reflux, we haven't figured out which yet, so we are now using the Dr. Brown bottles to see if that helps.  I've been using the Medela bottles which worked fine, but the nipple do collapse every once in awhile.

  • We use MAM bottles.  They are made up of 5 pieces and air vents out the bottom.  W has no issues with gas or choking.

  • DS had gas issues, and we really liked the Dr. Brown's bottles.

When you hold the bottle, are you tipping it downward or holding it more horizontally?  That can also make a difference when it comes to speed.

  • We use both Medela bottles and Tomee Tippee bottles.  We also give gas drops at each bottle feeding.  With that combo she doesn't have a problem.

  • Thanks, everyone. We do use gas drops after pretty much every feeding.

For those of you that use the Tommee Tippee bottles - do you use the sensitive tummy ones or the regular bottles? I saw that the sensitive tummy bottles have the 'straw' in the middle like the Dr. Browns bottles.

  • Peyton has dr browns and does great with them.  He's 2 weeks old and we have used the standard level 1 nipples since we brought him home.  He puts almost the entire nipple in his mouth and makes the cutest sounds while he eats.
