2 weeks early @ 37w6d, baby Xavier arrived on Sunday March 25th at 6:48am via emergency c-section.
I started contractions at 3 minutes apart lasting about 30seconds each on Saturday night around 10pm (DH's bday!) and my water broke just after midnight. Got to L&D and was 3cm dilated and 95% effaced. They admitted me and once I got to my room I was already 5cm, around 2am. I was having intense back labour and got an epidural soon after I was admitted. I felt every contraction in my butt, apparently the epidural only works on contractions in the front and not in the back (I did not know this). The OB said baby was "face up" so the back of his head was against my back which is what was causing all the pain.
Baby had decelerations on the monitor, his heart rate would decrease from 155 to 60 every time I had a contraction due to cord compression. Just after 6am she checked me again and I was still at 5cm. She said that because of the decelerations on the monitor and the fact that he was face up I was not likely to progress anymore on my own and pitocin was too risky because of baby's decelerations. So they rushed me in for a c-section.
Xavier was born at 6:48am and it was the scariest time of my life. He didn't cry and I couldn't see what was going on. He had an APGAR score of only 1/10. He wasn't breathing, was pale, flacid and had a heart rate of about 60. They tried intubating him twice and called a CODE on him and rushed him out of the OR. DH and I were left there having no idea what was going on as they closed me up. I freaked out and started hyperventilating and they had to give me medication to calm me down. It was the longest 25mintues of my life. Finally a nurse came in and said that he did start breathing on his own but needed a C-PAP machine. He was in the NICU on IV antibiotics to rule out sepsis. She told me that if in 4 hours he didn't improve they were going to transfer him to the children's hospital.
DH was able to stay with LO in the NICU while I was in recovery. And luckily, our little guy was able to breath on his own and they took off the C-PAP machine about 2 hours after he was born. He's a little fighter! He had to stay in the NICU for observation and IV antibiotics for at least 48hours though.
I finally got to see him for the first time 9 hours after he was born. It was very hard to see him in the incubator hooked up to all kinds of tubes but I was able to hold him and breast feed! I was so excited. After all he went through he was able to latch like a pro.
He spent his first 2 nights in the NICU and he was able to spend the 3rd night with me in my hospital room and was discharged home on day 4 as a "healthy newborn".
It's been a crazy week and i'm feeling so many mixed emotions and having so little sleep but things are getting better every day. He is breast feeding well and gaining weight, already passed his birth weight.
Hope all is well with everyone else!
