Success after IF

starting solids - what "gear" do I need?

we will be starting solids next week. What should I have handy? I'm going to try and make my own food to start off. Freezer bags? Ice trays? Infant spoons? (which do you recommend) what do you store your baby food in? Anything else I'm missing?

Should I use a blender or processor?

I'm so excited for this next stage! Thanks ladies!

  • Yep!  All we needed was a blender, a few ice cube trays, freezer ziplock bags for storing the frozen cubes, and baby spoons.   I used small ramekins we already had for heating and serving the pur?es.   

    Panda we used the Take 'n Toss spoons.  Loved them and didn't worry if we left them somewhere or lost them.

  • Nothing too fancy! We used and really liked these ice cube trays - found them really easy to get the food out of (and then threw the cubes into a freezer bag). And these spoons were recommended by a friend - again, not necessary, but I liked them as a first spoon. We used a food processor, but either would work. Good luck and have fun!
  • I agree with PP's.  I mostly steamed or baked fruits and veggies and then either pureed them in the food processor or mashed them with a potato masher when DS got a little more experienced.  I wouldn't make a bunch right away because if your DC is anything like mine it took about a month before he ate a cube consistenly at a sitting and then he worked up to a few at each meal.

    I used fruit purees to mix into plain full fat greek yogurt and DS loved brocolli/cheddar soup (I froze it in cubes).

    Also, don't be afraid to use spices or herbs.  I mixed cinnamon into apples and pears and nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and ginger into pumpkin and squash.  I also added basil to peas and green beans.  Mix and match things, you'll be surpirsed what they'll eat.

    I also have a set of the gerber bowls with lids.  They easily fit  three cubes for taking out to dinner or on a road trip.  I also used the gerber spoons that have a metal handle and a rubber covered spoon.

  • I like the take n toss stuff as well.  We use the spoons and the bowls with lids for when we are out

  • I use a blender because I do not have a processor...either will work.  I use a mix of ice cube trays and then I cover them with Press and Seal when I put them in the freezer.  Once frozen I transfer to ziplock freezer bags.  I reheat in ramekins.  The Take and toss are nice but not for reheating...only to take food on the go. I like the spoons with the soft tips that change color if the food is too hot.

  • We didn't already have ice cube trays, so I got a couple Orka ones from the Container Store. They're awesome - they have their own covers so the pur?e doesn't get freezer burn, plus the bottom of each cube is soft so you can push it right out.

    Also, I tried our blender but that didn't work for me - too difficult to get the pur?e out of it. Maybe because it's an old blender, IDK. I've been wanting to get a food processor anyway, so this was the perfect excuse LOL.
