The snake oil "fixes" of ADHD, AS, Autism land.

Navigating this world we are in has been a journey for sure.  I went through the the desperation of finding a "cure" for my son's issues, only to be let down time and again.  I spent thousands of dollars for a therapy that insurance didn't cover because I wanted to believe it would work- even though there isn't any evidence that it does.

I am writing this today because I saw an ad yesterday at the coffee shop for a "lecture" given by the doctor who has started this franchise business called, "Brain Balance Education Center"- they are popping up all over the country.  They are expensive and make huge claims about curing kids afflicted with these issues.

I feel I've learned my lesson about this stuff, but it makes me mad as hell that some desperate set of parents would fall victim to this.  In a tough economy, not many people have 6K to throw around.

The "doctor" btw who is the creator of this program and is currently touring the country promoting his books and the centers, doesn't even have a Phd.  He is a chiropractor.

Does anyone else take this as personally as I do?  I mean, I just feel these people are banking on our tough situations and milking our emotional states.  Why is this allowed to happen?

  • I do take it personally, but I don't put so much of the blame on the people pushing the "fix". I'm more annoyed with people like my mom who forward me things about coconut oil fixing autism. They do it so casually, like, "Oh- didn't you know? You could cure him with coconut oil! It's true, I read it on the internets." It is belittling to myself, who works hard at finding the therapies that work, and my son, who can't be cured from something they use to make french fries.

I do appreciate all my doctors and therapists who have tiptoed around the issue of these "snake oil remedies." I respect the parents who work so hard to provide GFCF, and believe them when they say it makes a difference in their child. Our doctor has never said "don't try it" but he gives the realistic statistics on when/how it works. He just asks that we talk to him first before trying anything.

  • there are charlatans everywhere you turn. Shi##y people prey on others' weaknesses all the time, regardless of their struggle. So I don't take it personally, but my heart does break for all those parents who are hanging their every hope on the words of a liar.

  • My DD was diagnosed with autism recently, and ever since my mother and grandma have been sending me crap (yes crap) in the mail about all of these reasons for how it was "caused" and how to "cure" and it is making me want to bash their heads in. It breaks my heart little by little that they are focusing on quick "fixes" and blame when they should be focused on her therapy and ways to relate to her as a person. I'll get off my soapbox in a second LoL I hate people that are giving these outrageous cure-alls and hurting my family in the process!

Speaking of stuff like this and what my gma sent in the mail... She gave me pamphlets and testimonies from fam friends that this actually works and I was wondering if anyone else tried it? It's called Mannatech Dietary Supplements? I don't know if they actually work because when I brought it up to a friend that does therapy for autism she sounded really apprehensive in her tone. She didn't say it did or didn't but she said to wait to try if I did (which I probably won't anyways) but I'd love to hear anyone's feedback...

  • I know! My gma has a friend that "swears" by the product for her child and I'm like "Wowzers! If it was so 'amazing' I'm sure everyone is using it then, right?" Confused ~~~facepalm~~~ I am definitely going to give them the book reference! Thanks! LoL!

  • Mannatech is a fraud.  Just go to the Texas Attorney Generals website.  They settled for 7.5 million for fraud making all kind of false claims.  Their newest talking head is a chiropractor by the name of Macie that gives "lectures"  They are just  a sale  pitch to buy products and then try to get you to join the MLM pyramid shame.  It really is said that people like this are out there
