How often do you wash swimsuits?

Random post, I know ;)

Typically, I'll wash them once or twice a season...I figure they get "cleaned off" in the pool..... unless we go swim in a lake, then I wash after that.

Now the girls started swim classes and I just washed them along with their towels after their first class. I'm kinda thinking washing them after each class would be good...I don't know, something about a public pool?

If it matters, both the swim school and my ILs pool where we swim are salt water, so no nasty chlorine messing up the suits..

Re: How often do you wash swimsuits?

  • We swim all the time. I rinse them and hang them to dry after each time we swim, and wash them every other week or so.
  • Loading the player...
  • We only wear ours once and possibly twice before they get thrown in the wash.  We all have at least 2 suits.

I wash them after every use regardless of the type of water they were swimming in. I used to work at a summer camp...trust me that you don't want to deal with the problems that can come from not washing them, especially with girls.

Good to know. This isn't even on my radar yet, but I'm glad I'm in the know now.

  • My kids each have 6 swimsuits if I washed them after every use they would be washed well over 40 times a year there is no way those suckers would last and I buy quality suits. We go to the pool three times a day in the summer.

ok, you "sold" me ;) I'll be washing after every time. Or at the very least, rinsing.

  • We don't swim very often, but when we do I hand wash with laundry detergent that night and line dry. I never put swimsuits in the washing machine.

Ya, that was my concern about washing once a week (after swim class)...if they would hold up. I washed on delicate/hand wash, but still. If we swam as much as you, I definitely would be rinsing most of the time, then washing every so often!

  • We swim 2-4 times a week.  With DS#2 still taking long naps and other activities we don't make it to the pool more often than that.

  • I throw them in the hand wash cycle in our washing machine once a week. DD1 has swimming lessons on Monday evening, and we generally all swim together after that. I figure I might as well wash them since I have bras and other hand washables to do too.

I can't imagine only washing them once or twice a season. Yuck.

ETA: I also hang to dry. I don't think they'd hold up to a normal wash and drying in the dryer.

  • They get washed each time after they are worn.
  • I wash them after every use.  We don't swim more than once a week, though.

  • I wash after each wear, but we only have chorine pools here.
  • I wash them after every swim class.  I've found that if I don't wash them right away, it's impossible to get the chlorine smell out.  I know it's not a huge deal since 95% of the time they wear their swimsuits it is in a chlorinated pool.  The smell just really bugs me.

  • Swimsuits get washed like underwear here...  you wear them, they get washed.  It just seems more sanitary that way, although I'm pretty sure all the chlorine in a pool would kill just about ANY germ LOL!
  • I wash swimsuits every time we use them.

  • I wash after each use. We all have a lot of bathing suits since we swim a lot in the summer and I don't always get to laundry.
  • We do swim lessons 2x a week.  I rinse them out and hang dry them after the lessons and actually wash them every couple weeks probably.

  • Um we definitely wash them after every use. Even in a regular pool (i.e. not a lake), kids can pee in there, etc. Who knows what's in there? Chlorine helps, yes, but I think it is still not clean enough to wear twice.

  • Wow, well now I feel all gross! LOL.Thanks for not being rude with your answers ;) I will definitely be washing them more often :)

FWIW, swim season here is only like, 2 months (because I'm such a baby w/ cold water). Add in the few times we go to the lake to swim, and wash after each of those times, and I probably average every other week. "um" "yuck"? It's not like I'm going months and months LOL.

and after lake swimming...so really it's like every other week at the absolute most.

And ya, I definitely would not ever put a swim suit in the dryer! Line dry only :) I usually wash them on delicate but I'm thinking hand washing would probably be the way to go..
