I was pretty sore after my tri workout Saturday (bike and swim) and got a massage. The guy asked me what type I wanted and I opted for deep tissue. Oh my goodness! It was so
destressing that I started crying - all the emotions from the past few months, etc...he didn't know because it happened while he was working my back. I was embarrased and glad he didn't notice
Re: Massage Saturday after tri workout...
MT here...
was it physically or emotional distressing? If it physically hurt you shoud ALWAYS say something. a deep tissue massage can be intense, but it should not be painful and make you cringe. It should feel like the kinks are being worked out, not like new ones are being made!
if it was emotionally distressing, thats normal and can happen. we often hold emotional stress in our bodies. If you clench a certain muscle everytime you are angry or sad, chances are those emotions may resurface when said muscle is worked on. Dont be embarassed...when i was in school we were taught to provide a safe enviroment for our clients to release their emotions in (in an appropriate manner) If you are having emotional responses to bodywork I would find a therapist that you feel comfortable with. when I have had a client cry I ask if they are ok, reassure them that its ok to feel emotional, and offer them a tissue. you should never be made to feel uncomfortable by the therapist.
