BLW checkin

I know LBB is one of the early babies on the board, but I also remember some of you were starting last week or so, so I figured I'd start this - and if we don't like Tuesdays, we can put it another day.

  • Is this for baby led weaning, or just solids in general?  Sorry, I'm not that great at acronyms Embarrassed

  • Hits: Mangoes and green beans were the go to favorites - he chose those every time they made an appearance, although he very much enjoyed a piece of pork chop from my dinner.

Misses: He didn't seem to care for peaches (which is funny, because he seemed to like nectarine).  We offered him apple, honeydew, and watermelon but he didn't chose any of them.

    Highlights/Concerns/Anything you want to share:

*His "first meal" was blueberry pancakes, turkey sausage, green beans, and a homemade grapefruit jello (grapefruit juice with gelatin with pieces of avocado and orange pieces).  We videoed the entire thing - which is pretty long. I edited it down, but it's still 6 minutes.

    * It's kind of fun to watch "the book" in action.  Everything they wrote about really happens.  The gag reflex pushes the food right out of his mouth.  And it's amazing to see how quickly he learns how to pick things up or not put them as far in his mouth.

  • We gave DD avocado and banana and she loved both!  We have yet to try anything else though, besides Baby Mum-mums.

She didn't poop for a week after banana so I think we might hold off on that for a bit.

I definitely learned my lesson on giving her anything while clothed. Not only was it a mess, but the banana totally stained her clothes and wouldn't come out.  Now we feed her in just a diaper and just rinse her off after!

  • This is a great idea!  We haven't started yet, but I'm sure I'll have questions when we do.  Glad to hear it's working out for those that have tried it.

Do any of you cloth diaper?  How's the poop transition going?  I'm thinking of buying some disposable liners and using those for awhile.

We're not exactly BLW, but I am offering H some pieces of regular food in addition to/instead of purees at some meals. His poop is DISGUSTING: Foul smelling, awful mushy texture and just nasty. And his poops are HUGE! I'm rinsing in the toilet after poops and the whole thing is just awful and it's honestly making me rethink CDs. Ick!

We don't cloth diaper and are obviously still in early days, but there is already a difference in smell.  There are only tiny little pieces of food, since he's not ingesting much (some little grapefruit pieces, a broccoli sprout or two) so I'm expecting the smell to get worse.  As for amount, it's still the same as it was before - which makes sense since he's still getting mostly breastmilk.

I have read BLW so I am not coming at this blindly but are you offering all foods? Is there anything you are skipping besides peanuts? I am thinking like eggs, strawberries, peanut butter etc.

I plan on asking ped but a friend told me he didn't seem to thrilled about BLW.

We're pretty much just skipping all nuts and nut products, sauces and most processed foods (other than eating out, but I try to get my food a little "healthier" - steamed veggies, no sauces or sauces on the side with meats.)  We don't have a lot of food allergies in my family - my mom is allergic to mango, but it seems pretty clear that LBB isn't.

I'm waiting a bit on strawberries, not for allergy reasons, but just because they don't seem as easy for him to hold at this point in time since they're not long enough to poke out of his hands.  Same with foods that require pincer grasp like most berries/grapes.

He had eggs for breakfast in a quesadilla - so I could cut it into a strip for him - and seemed to enjoy that, no issues so far.

  • We are doing sort of a BLW hybrid. She's grabbed a few things out of my hand or plate and put them in her mouth, so I'm going with it even though she's not 6 months yet. I'm not offering solids on a consistant basis, but I am holding her on my lap while we eat dinner, and when she gets grabby, I allow it.

Hits: Avacado, spaghetti, lettuce, whole banana, fresh green peppers, pureed pears

Misses: She was not crazy about applesauce and she got a piece of rotisserie chicken in her mouth and quickly spit it out.

  • We're doing purees, but I just wanted to say that I loved your video, blu! How adorable, and what a cool first meal to be able to tell him about when he's older Smile

Blu, Lily watched part of the video with me and as soon as she caught sight of LBB she started cooing and giggling.  I think she's got a crush on your boy!  Wink

What book are you using as a guide for BLW?  I think I want to do a combo of purees and BLW, but couldn't find any books at the library on it and didn't want to buy a book without a recommendation.
