June 2012 Moms

May I join you ladies?

Hello! I am from the July 2012 boards, but due to some not-so-great-news my SO and I received a month ago, I will be having a June 2012 baby.

I have been given the news that I have a very rare pregnancy complication called "Vasa Previa". In a nutshell, my son's main blood vessel that is supposed to be growing inside of the umbical cord, is growing outside of it and attaching itself to my placenta and cervix. Its laying completely over my cervix. This means that if I were to go into labor on my own, and my water were to break, so would the blood vessel and my son would bleed out and die before they could save him.

I am no longer allowed to work, be on my feet for "too long", and am at home on bed rest, though I still get up and do things around the house. I am not allowed to lift anything over 15lbs. When I over do it, I get major cramping, sometimes spotting and lots of BH contractions. :(  I have an ultrasound once a month, pretty soon it'll be every two weeks. Had my last one last Friday, and my condition hasn't gotten any better, and most likely it will not.

Vasa Previa usually isnt caught prenatally. I am a very lucky woman to have had an amazing ultrasound tech who "just decided" to give me a trans-vaginal ultrasound because I had very light spotting a few days before. Because of her, my son will live. He will be here no later than June 26th, when I am at 35 weeks, so we'll have a Preemie on our hands, and that's okay with us! I will most likely be placed in the hospital at some point in the upcoming weeks on bed rest so that if something were to happen, they can get him out rather quickly!

Looking forward to getting to know you ladies, and may each and every one of you have a wonderful, healthy rest of your pregnancies! :)

  • High Fives to that u/s tech.  My step-sister had vasa previa and it did not end well.  You were right in the fact that it was not caught prenatlly.  I am so happy that you and LO will be okay :).  Welcome to the June Mommies *hugs* T&Ps for the remainder of your pregnancy.
  • I am SO terribly sorry to hear about your step-sister. My heart hurts for her and her family. I fully believe that a trans-vaginal color doppler(how you catch Vasa Previa) should be mandatory during the Level 2 ultrasound in the 2nd Trimester. It will save SO many lives!!!

  • Wow that is a lot to take in! I am so sorry you are having to deal with that but it sounds like you are keeping a postivie attitude and excited for baby to get here, and that is what will keep you strong. I know the feeling on seeing the doctors all the time. I have to see my OB every two weeks since I was about 11 weeks pregnant, I see a high risk ob every month, and a kidney specialist every month and that will also be changing to seeing all three of them every week here very soon. They found out that I am in renal failure from a 24 hour urine test my ob requested in the beginning of my pregnancy that I never had any clue about. So just like you they have been under magnifying glass.

But lots of T&P for you and your little one, and of course for you family because I know that can be hard on everyone involved. Good luck with everything, and if you ever need anyone to talk to about all of it feel free to message me :)

  • Hi! I'm in a very similar situation as you. I have velementous cord insertion (which is sometimes vasa previa, although I don't think mine is). I too will be looking at an early delivery... might be as early as this Friday. They monitor baby's growth (he's been small all along) so it kinda depends on how he does on his growth scan this Friday. He was only 1 pound 12 ounces at 28w3d.

I'm so happy that mine, like yours, was caught really early. I am currently on home bedrest, but was in the hospital for 4 weeks. Hospital bedrest sucked... the nurses were great, but I was not getting a lot of rest with them constantly sticking me on the monitor (3 times a day, 1 hour at a clip), the constant temperature taking and blood pressure checks, etc etc etc. I begged for my release after his last growth scan since I was happy with his growth (7 ounces in 2 weeks... it had only been 1 ounce in the 2 weeks prior to that). I'm much happier at home, but I know it's only a matter of time before I'll have to go back. So enjoy the home bedrest while you can! Books, movies, the internet, and phone have kept me very busy. I've also been able to do alot of organizing at home (off my feet, of course). So I feel semi-productive even though I can't do too much!

    Best of luck to you!

  • I will be praying for you and your little guy. That is good that the tech was able to see the problem so that you are able to take precautionary measures. Keep your head up! :)

  • Really sorry about hearing why you have to join us but welcome!
  • Wow...my heart goes out to you and your little guy.  Rest up!! Nothing is more important than having your baby and helping him grow!!

This exactly. What a blessing that that tech decided to do the extra ultrasound. I hope that things stay uneventful and you get to wait until 35 weeks to have your little one.
