April 2012 Moms

Dear Canadians...

I'm watching Live with Kelly and they just taught me about poutine (spelling?) and all it's deliciousness. I have never heard of it before and now I'd like to hop a flight to Canada and eat some. Is it as good as it looks!?

  • Yes! But I find you need to be in the mood for it. It's heavy and greasy.

You can try making your own - just get some canned gravy and shredded mozza and it's a decent make-shift poutine.Though not as good as the "real" stuff.

  • You had me up until cheese curds...I like cottage cheese, but cannot imagine it warm...

That sounds so disgusting and awesome at the same time. I'm just couple hours from Ontario, who wants to meet me?

  • I'm watching Live, too. Looks like an amazing pregnancy food! mmm

Cheese curds are different than cottage cheese...it's closer to little clumps of mozzarella cheese because it melts like regular cheese.

  • That sounds delicious. And also made me realize that I've never been to Canada! Need to add that to my bucket list:

    -Visit Canada

    -Eat delicious cheesey gravy fries

Ditto this.  Nothing like cottage cheese.  Not at all wet, and much bigger pieces.  They also squeak against your teeth when you eat them plain.

Annnnnnnd, now I want to ditch my spinach salad and get poutine for lunch.

My favourite brunch place does a breakfast poutine.  Fries, pulled pork, cheese curds, a poached egg and Hollandaise sauce.  Omg so good.

  • YUM!! My dad is Canadian and I have a lot of family there. I have also craved poutine multiple times this pregnancy. And of course, I'm craving it now....

  • I see some Americans jonesing for this. You don't have to go to Canada to get it. Chicago-area Houlihan's restaurants offers it, but they call it Disco Fries. You can also get it at a handful of non-chain restaurants in Northern Illinois and Wisconsin. If you want real, fresh cheese curds, you kind of want to go to Wisconsin anyways.

I'm in mid-Michigan. I can make it to London in two and a half hours.

  • We spend a week in Nova Scotia every year (Cape Breton). DH's family is from there, and every year we must get poutine!

  • I love Poutine. And Buttertarts. And Coffee Crisp Chocolate Bars. And Ketchup Chips. Us Canadians got it good when it comes to junk food!

I'm pretty close to there! (Relatively speaking in a country the size of Canada.) I'm in New Brunswick :)

Cape Breton is beautiful, I've been there a few times.

  • This was my favorite drunk food in college (Northern Maine). I was a vegetarian but made my only exception for poutine! We used to make lots of border runs when we were under 21 to go clubbing in Quebec, and this was always our end-of-night selection. Mmmm. I don't like fries, hate gravy and am weirded out by squeaky cheese curd, but together it's pure bliss. When I was last in Montreal, I got an upscale version at a fancy restaurant with gnocchi as the base. ZOMG, amazing.

Ashley, I've seen it on a few menus here. There used to be a restaurant named Poutine in the LES, but I think it might have closed. I know I had it somewhere along Smith St in Cobble Hill one night.

We drive from Massachusetts to Cape Breton, so we spend some quality time driving through New Brunswick. It is such a beautiful province! One of the more enjoyable parts of our journey.

Yes! My best friend lives on Smith St and just informed me there is a deli near her that serves it. I know what I'll be having sometime this week for sure!

Don't even tell me I miss some of that stuff so much!!! Every time I make a trip to Canada I buy some Ketchup chips, and come to think of it I haven't had a butter tart since I got married which is close to 3 years Sad I think that will be the order for food next time I go visit my family!  As well as some Coffee Crisp chocolate bars, yumm!!
