2nd Trimester

Pain in hip flexor

For the last few days I have been having a pretty bad pain in my left hip flexor. I can't tell if this is pregnancy related or if I simply pulled a muscel. My mom suggested that maybe Olivia is laying on a nerve. Anyone else with this pain or any remidies for it?

Re: Pain in hip flexor

  • I get a shooting pain up and down my spine from time to time .. I think that the boy twin rolling on my spine and hitting a nerve. I too get pains in my hips and pelvic bone. I was assuming it was from my body trying to relax everything and prepare for birth! I did notice if I am sleeping or laying on one side for too long my hip will feel like something is pinched. Then I move off it and a little while after it lets up. You could try to re-position yourself and see if that will help. If not maybe convince the little one to move!   =)

  • Sadly, this started at 19 weeks for me and has moved to both hips now.  It's likely because it is your second pregnancy and the relaxin is going to work on your hips already.  If you're not sleeping with a pillow between your legs, start.

I can't stand on one leg (so I get dressed sitting down), getting into my Suburban is extra painful, and I don't walk as much as I did before pregnancy.  A couple of hours on my feet is enough to put me in serious pain for a couple of days afterward.  Mention it to your doc, but mine told me it's totally normal and will go away after pregnancy and it's likely to be worse for the next one.

Heat has helped some, but use a water bottle or rice warmer to avoid getting burned by a heating pad. And I was advised to take Tylenol if it got bad.

    It sucks, plain and simple.

  • I had this at the end of my 1st pregnancy.  I found *some* relief by sitting on a yoga ball and rotating my hips.  My dr seemed to think maybe she had wedged her head in such a way that she was pressing on a nerve.  So by rotating and opening up my hips it helped - a little.

Good luck.  There were nights I actually sat on that ball and put my head on the side of the bed and tried to sleep through the tears.  It was rough.

  • I thought I was the only one. My entire hip joint goes numb. It sucks!

  • I had major hip flexor issues in high school & college because of a horseback riding accident (fell directly on my hip...has never been the same since). Try stretching it out in kind of a lunge position (hold onto something to keep your balance) and if you have access to a treadmill or eliptical, walk backwards. It sounds really weird, but do it for about 5 minutes a day and it will help strengthen the muscles opposite your flexors and will really take away a lot of the pain.
  • I didn't really have this in pregnancy, but I've dealt with tendonitis in my hip flexor off and on over the years.  It's so incredibly painful.

Have you seen a chiropractor?  I saw one throughout my last pregnancy and give that a lot of credit for the fact that my tendonitis didn't flare up.

I also found PT to be very helpful.  If you're really struggling, I would see if your OB would give you a referral to someone with experience giving PT to pregnant patients.
