Postpartum Depression

For those of you who were skeptical about taking antidepressants...

I was diagnosed with PPD/PPA and given 10mg of Celexa to take. Im not sure if I should start them or not since mainly I feel my depression and anxiety are a result of medical symptoms I started experiencing after giving birth. I mean I think I had the typical "baby blues" and some normal anxiety after having DD. Or maybe I do have true PPD/PPA because I have anger issues. Either way I'm not sure if I want to start taking them out of fear of possible side effects and withdrawal issues but part of me feels like if I start to take them, maybe I will begin to feel better. I dont know, Im so confused.

Any thoughts or advice would be helpful. TIA

  • I just started taking Paxil about two weeks ago - same diagnosis.  I was/ am nervous about taking meds but I went with it.  I'm "okay" with it so far.  I go to the doctor tomorrow to talk about it all.  Anything's better than the sobbing and uncontrollable anxiety.

  • Thanks for your response. I'm definitely considering taking them.
  • I had a hard time rationalizing taking meds, but my therapist said, you would get a cast for a broken leg, right? And so the cast in this case are the meds, and then I've weaned off the meds, but still need therapy (just like PT) to get by and regain the strength I used to have. I think meds got me to a place where I could learn and practice skills. I had PPA mostly that was turning into PPD because of how long I let it go on. I think meds are a great short or long term solution. It was so refreshing to feel like my old self again. I think I ended up scaring away friends with my pessimism, but after being on meds, my optimism and positive outlook came back.

  • I would try the Celexa.  I started out on 10mg of Celexa and it did nothing for me.  It may help you though...everyone is different.  My pychiatrist said 10mg of Celexa is like a child dose...super, super small.  If it doesn't work a bigger dose may be given.  I don't use it anymore....I use 100mg of Trazadone.  Good luck...if you are feeling bad...I would def. try your meds.
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...
