Lena VS Lina

Which name are you more likely to pronounce as "lee-na"?  If you'd pronounce both of them that way, what spelling do you prefer and why? TIA!

Re: Lena VS Lina

  • Lena.

  • I know a Leina.  Of your 2 options I think Lena would get the closest for pronounciation.
  • Lena= lee-nuh or len-uh

    Lina= lin-uh or line-uh

    ...so I think you should spell it Lena, but people will probably still say it "wrong" half the time. I love the name Lena, but I don't think I could get past the two different pronunciations thing, so it's not on my list

    At first, I thought Lina, but after thinking about it, I'm thinking neither.

    Lena is definitely pronounced LEH-na (or should be, if you wanted it to sound like "ee" , why not just use "ee"?)

    In the book The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, isn't one of the girls' names Lena, but it's pronounced Leena? I think it is, and that bugs the crap out of me...

    I heard the name from the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie.  It's spelled Lena and when she says her name it's "lee-na" but when the man she likes in Greece says it, he says "leh-na".  It's confusing.  I've seen both pronunciations used on websites but I wanted to get a feel for what real life people would say when they saw the different spellings.

  • I prefer Lena. I guess I would prnounce them both that way, but I can't help but think Lina is Lye-nuh at first.

    This!  I actually really like this name a lot.

  • Behind the name says Lena = LE-na or Lye-na (Russian).  It goes on to say it can be short for names that end in "lena" like Helena and Magdalena.

    Lina does not have a pronunciation guide but it says other variants include Carrie, do I'm assuming it means it's primarily a shortened form of Carolina, which can be said either as Care-oh-lee-nah or care-oh-lie-nah.

    Oersonally, I've always seen Lena as lee-nah and I've never seen Lina.

  • Lena = LAY nuh or LEE nuh

    Lina = LINE uh

    I would go with Lena.

  • I know a Lena and she pronounces it Lee-nuh, so that is the one I would go with!

  • I would pronounce both Lee-na. I much prefer the spelling of Lena.

  • Lena was my great-grandmothers name and she pronounced it Lee-na.  I also have a friend from Russia named Lena and she pronounces it the same way.  So this is how it should be pronounced.  Lina only works for me if it's a nn for something like Carolina.

  • I think I like Lena slightly more.  What about Leena?  Or is that totally wrong?  :-)  I also like Leela (character on Futurama, haha).

    We used Nina for LO and while most people say Nee-nah, a few have said Nine-ah.  Not enough to make me concerned that she'll be messed up for life, haha.

  • I would pronounce them both the same.

    Lina in italian is pronounced LEE NAH, but i think in this country you should go with the E

    I dont think people would pronounce Gina Gineah, so i dont understand the confusion, but to make life easier go for the E.

  • I prefer the way Lena looks vs Lina.

    However, I know 2 Lena's. One pronounces it LEH-na, and the other LAY-na. So, while I can see how phonetically it can be LEE-na, thats not what I think of first.

    That said, I would go with Lina. And fwiw, I would never think to say LYE-na. Lina rhymes with Tina.

  • My great-grandmother was Lena, pronounce LEE-na, and my sister's best friend from Sweden is Lina, pronounced LEE-na. So either work, depending on the location.

    On a personal note, this is my FAVORITE name. We are due in 8 weeks with a little girl and I would do anything to have my DH like Lena (choosing to spelling it Lena per the family connection). I hadn't seen many people discussing it, so it makes is unique yet still classic. The DH isn't a fan of old classic names, he likes Bailey, Piper, more modern names. It has been a disagreement for weeks!

  • I am more likely to pronounce Lina the way you say. Lena, to me, sounds like "leh-na" in both Spanish and French, so even though Americans do say lee-na, I just don't see it.

  • I pronounce them both as if they are Italian---so Lena=leh-na and Lina = Lee-na. I love the name Lena (leh-na), but I think it seems most people pronounce it Lee-na.
