Another crib-sharing question...

I'm sure this question has been asked a million times, but I'm just too tired to dig through all the posts.  For those of you who did put your twins in the same crib, when did you do it and how long did it last?  My plan right now is to sleep them in the same PNP (bassinet) by our bed, though I do have two RNP's for during the day to keep downstairs, and I was planning on putting them in the crib around 4-6 months or so (PNP until then, probably not in the bassinet later on since they will be too heavy by that age).  Honestly I would like to keep them in the same crib for as much of the first year as possible, but I don't know how realistic that is.

Re: Another crib-sharing question...

  • They stayed in a full size co-sleeper for 3 months... then in a regular size crib until they were close to 6 months.  BUT they had delayed gross motor skills and that's when they first started rolling over.  I think once they start moving around you have to separate them.

  • Once they start rolling over it's really not safe to keep them in the same crib.  Around 6 months is when they really started rolling and moving in their cribs.

  • We kept them in the same crib until they were done swaddling, which in their case was 6m. Like meldoo said, once they're moving around I wouldn't do it anymore.

  • My girls were in their RnP's for the first four weeks but honestly that was only because their room was so damn hot and we needed to get black out shades to reduce the sun exposure/heat from their windows. After we had them in their crib together until about 3.5 months where they couldn't fit side by side anymore and separated them. I started my son off in his crib right away as well. (We also live in a row house and the rooms are pretty close together). My girls sleep a lot better separated.
  • My little guys slept in our room in the same pack in play for the first 2 weeks then we moved them to separate cribs in their room (I had intentions of them staying in our room for longer but DH couldnt sleep as well w/ them in there plus I didn't BF so they didn't have/need to sleep right by me). As PP said around 4-5 mos they start moving around alot when they sleep so it could become a SIDS risk if sleeping together. Now at 7 mos there is NO way they could share a crib as I have put them in one of their cribs momentarily when refilling diapers, putting away laundry and sure enough one is kicking the other in the head or grabbing another's eyeball within seconds so it is always short lived.

  • We separated them around 3.5 months, when DS started scooting around in his swaddle and ended up with his feet in DD's face every night. At the very latest you'll have to separate them when they start rolling over.
