Eczema help

Both of my kids have eczema, but DS (14 mos) is worse afflicted than DD (5 years).

With the recent change of seasons, his eczema has flared out of control. Nothing seems to be helping.  We haven't tried any new foods, we've not changed any of our products or routines, but it did coincide with the change to Spring like weather a couple of weeks ago.

We do dye/fragrance free everything. Baths are either plain water, or oatmeal, as often as possible (mostly daily, sometimes we miss a day). If we use cleanser, it's Cetaphil. Immediately after bath, he gets patted dry, and coated in Vanicream.

He has awful patches behind his knees, in his elbows, on his wrists/hands and under his chin.

We have a prescription cream - Hydrocortisone Valerate - which we use to treat flares, but we can't use it regularly. As soon as the flares get knocked down, we'll stop using, and then it comes right back.

Help. What will make this poor boy less itchy!? I went in last night to check on him while he was sleeping and he was itching in his sleep.  I put socks over his hands every night, and keep his nails short, but he's still scratching himself bloody if we don't keep  him completely covered.

Any suggestions/advice?

Re: Eczema help

  • We are on a trival amount of zyrtec daily (1.5 ml).  You might want to check in with your pedi for your dosage.  It doesn't take much, it might take a bit to get the right low level dose.  Too much actually dries out the skin and makes it worse.

I sent him an email but haven't heard back yet. I am thinking that may be a suggestion.

  • I too suggest testing for food allergies and Celiac Disease.

  • I'd recommend allergy testing as well. I haven't exactly figured out what causes my son's eczema, but gluten, sugar and corn seem to aggravate it, at least some of the time.

When his eczema was at its worst, what worked for us was getting it under control with prescription hydrocortisone and daily baths in epsom salt or baking soda. I'd then lather him with Sweetsation Therapy Organic Calendula Butter Cream while he was still damp. He rarely has flare-ups now, but I try to do baths every other day with Natures Paradise Organic 2-in-1 foaming shampoo and body wash, followed by the calendula cream.

I would definitely stay away from Cetaphil cleanser and anything else containing sodium lauryl sulfate. SLS is a skin irritant that disturbs the lipid barrier of the skin. I've heard that it is often used as a control in allergy tests because so many people are allergic to it. And it is tons of commercial products: shampoos, hand soaps, dishwashing soaps, laundry detergents, etc.
