cervical checks follow up

Continuing on from the post below, I asked about these checks at my last OB appt. The nurse told me that they begin doing them at 35 weeks and continue at every appointment thereafter. I asked if I could decline and she said no. Is this true? I suppose the rules may vary by state (this is Missouri) but I was really surprised to find out I have zero say in the matter.

Just wondering if anybody has advice on where I can go to get more information about this?

    From what I understand, you can decline if you want to.  As long as the baby's not in distress, they can't touch you.

    There's no law in any state that says you have to get cervical checks. The nurse may have told you that couldn't decline them because it is there policy, but if you talk to the doctor and tell them that you don't want them, they can't force you. You have the legal right to refuse any medical procedure/treatment.

    You can decline...your body...your decision.  It is not a required medical procedure, ACOG does not recommend it as necessary and no state requires it.

    You definitely can refuse!

    My office doesn't even do them because they feel they're so unnecessary. My MW said that dilation and effacement aren't good indicators of labor. A woman can be 3cm dilated for weeks while another can go from 1 to 5cm in a matter of a couple hours.

    Like a PP said, your body your decision.  I am still on the fence on whether I want them or not but either way it's MY decision not the nurse or doctors decision.

    I can't believe she just told you "no"!  Honestly, even if your baby was in distress (in which case you would be a pretty rotten person to refuse treatment) you would still be able to say "no".  The worse that can happen is they tell you they can no longer treat you.  Your dr cannot force you to do anything!  If you aren't comfortable, just tell your dr/nurse that you will not be "disrobing" for a cervical check.  What are they going to do, strap you down, strip off your clothes, and forcibly jab you?  Nope, just say "no" lady! Wink

    Nurse is an idiot.  You do not have to have ANY medical procedure against your will.  It is not your doctor's right to shove his or her fingers up your vagina.  I'd be getting a new doc and practice if I was told they were mandatory.
