What IS a birth ball?

I have one of those big exercise balls you use at the gym to do crunches or whatnot, is it really basically the same thing or are there some special attributes of a 'birth' ball. Just curious.

That's what I did. I bought one at Target when it was on sale. I use it all the time now when my back hurts.

That's the other thing it's good for, aching backs!

  • was wondering about this myself.. what do you do with it?  just rock around on it or whatever feels comfortable?  my hospital tour lady was super excited to point out that each delivery room has a birthing ball stand...

After getting to fiddle with one during my birth class, I see myself sitting on it and rocking, bouncing, rolling my hips, etc. And leaning over it while on my knees. Great position for someone to apply counter pressure or rub your back.

Haven't yet, but I'd have it inflated because a)I'd use it while in labor at home and b)once you're ready to use it, do you really want to wait?

We had it inflated at home because I used it for practice and then while I was laboring at home.  Before we left for the hospital DH deflated it and then inflated it again in triage.  The ball came with a little air pump, it only takes a couple of minutes.
