what to wash baby clothes in..

Do any of you second time mom's have any suggestions on what type of laundry detergent to use? I am clueless on this. My baby boy already has quite the closet of clothes so the sooner I start washing the better. Thanks!

Re: what to wash baby clothes in..

  • I know there is Dreft? which is "designed for childrens clothes" though I always used the same that we used (varied). I never had any problems!

  • From past experiences with both DD and DS, I would avoid Dreft or other 'baby scented detergents".   Both of them had rashes from the start with Dreft, so it was a no-brainer for us.   We use All Free & Clear for the kiddos and haven't had any issues with rashes, etc.  When combined with the Clorox 2 free & clear, I have gotten out 95% of the stains they encounter on a daily basis LOL.

I've also known friends that preferred 7th Generation and Tide Free & Clear as well.  HTH!

EDIT:  Also, I'd recommend not washing too many clothing items yet.  Sizing can be way off on newborns, and you have no idea how big LO will be at delivery (just trying to save you a hassle with exchange/returns Smile

  • We're going to try Charlie's Soap (it's actually a detergent) for cloth diapers, so hopefully it works. Whatever ends up working for diapers we'll use on all of our clothes.

  • We use a free and clear type detergent for all of our clothes and never had any issues.  I think Dreft is the biggest rip-off because it offers no benefit over any other free and clear and it is so expensive.

  • We have always used ALL's unscented detergent ( in an all white bottle). DH is very allergic to soaps, and so we have just kept with using that for DS too and haven't had any problems.

  • I used Purex dye/scent free in the beginning.  For his cloth diapers, I used Rockin' Green.

Once I found out he wasn't sensitive to scents and whatnot I just washed his stuff in Gain (what we use).

  • I also use All Free'n'Clear or Tide Free'n'Clear. I add Oxy Clean to boost and have gotten all snot, throw up, number 1 &2 accidents out of clothes...it all. I really am not a bleach person, especially for my and daughter's clothes.

  • I used Dreft. Or non scented hypoallergenic detergent. Worked great for me. It will be hard to tell until LO gets here and you find out if it affects them.

  • I had a friend start out using the expensive, organic baby soap, but now just uses the Arm and Hammer free and clear you can get at costco.

this is my plan for now incase baby has allergies to dye/fragarance.

  • I used regular detergent but learned that it "stained" the whiter things...this time around I will be using a dye-free detergent for the baby's clothes. It'll work just as well as the extremely expensive Dreft, which, I never ever thought was necessary. As long as the clothes were clean.

  • I just used our regular detergent (Tide Cold Water). For DD's things, I don't put in as much as for ours, and at first, I put everything through the rinse cycle a second time to help get as much detergent out as possible.

And I second PP's comment about maybe not washing everything ahead of time since you don't know what size LO will fit in at first. I would think you would be safe washing anything 3-6M and up, but I would only do a few newborn and 0-3M things ahead of time so you can return the rest if needed.

  • We wash baby's clothes in the same stuff we use, a homemade, eco-friendly, unscented detergent. Unscented and gentle is the key for baby's clothes but in all honesty, baby will spend so much time against your clothes that it makes sense to me to switch the whole family.
  • Thanks for posting this.  I was thinking Dreft but after reading everyones responses I've changed my mind.

  • We use whatever Free & Clear detergent is on sale (no perfumes or dyes).  I use it too because I have eczema.

I bought Dreft in the beginning with DS and it's heavily perfumed...I don't know how they label that as being better for baby's skin vs. a regular detergent. lol
