3rd Trimester

Could I be farther along?

When I went to the doctor they had asked when my last period was and i never kept track of it so i just went with something off the top of my head. They are saying i am 28 weeks due at the end of june. My friends are also pregnant and they are farther along than me and my belly is way bigger than theirs. I have no yet asked my doctor to do a fetal weight ultra sound i figured it was to soon. I just wonder if there is anyway to tell besides ultra sound??? help!!

  • I would have told them that you have no clue when your last period was.

They might be basing that on your fundal height (hipbone to top of uterus), but the fact that your belly is bigger means nothing. Im huge compared to some and some bumps put mine to shame.

  • Haven't you had any ultrasounds done earlier in pregnancy? They usually send you for a viability ultrasound to help measure the gestation then a level 2 ultrasound which is the gender scan. They will not do a growth scan until you are about 35 weeks and some doctors dont do them at all unless you are measuring big/small. Depending on your body type, and how the baby is positioned you may look bigger or smaller. I wouldn't just go by the thought that you look bigger.

  • You should have had an ultrasound by now to date your pregnancy (assuming you're already in the third trimester).  If you havent, I certainly would inform your doctor that you need one, or find another doctor that will give you one.  That will give you a better idea of what week the baby is measuring.  Belly size really makes no difference.  My belly is extremely small compared to friends of mine at almost 36 weeks and my baby is actually supposedly measuring two weeks ahead (so 38 weeks).  I wouldnt base baby's age on a guess, especially at this stage.  And tell your doctor you werent exactly sure about your period.  It's better to be honest about it so you dont miss milestones for certain imperative tests on baby's health.
  • Not true- they will do growth ultrasounds earlier, but only for medical necessity.  I started having growth ultrasounds at 28 weeks and have to go every 2 weeks until I deliever.
