Long name or short?

What do you think about giving a formal name on the birth cert. and using the short version, or just using the short version ?

I think we've finally settled on a boy name...kinda

We both like Leo Xavier.

One of us wants Leonardo, called Leo, and the other wants just Leo.

Re: Long name or short?

  • This we may be struggling with if we have a boy... I LOVE Enzo... but Dh wants a "formal" name so we were thinking Vincenzo or Lorenzo...

  • I'm in the fan club of longer/formal names, with nicknames.

Our little girl will be Liliana, with Lily as her likely nickname.

  • I like Leo Xavier in this case.

I grew up with a name that a lot of people consider a nick name and I never disliked it or wished I had a "formal" name.  It was actually kind of nice when filling out all those bubble sheets in school.

  • I have grown up with what everyone assumes is a nickname though it is my legal name.  As I became an adult, I sort of lamented that I didn'thave some fantastic professional classic sounding name.  I love formality and names that stand the test of time instead of feeling trendy.

On the other hand, I never liked people giving me nicknames as a child.  Nothing bugged me more as when people tried to shorten my already short name into something else.  "That is NOT my name" a very indignant little Jilly would announce to people that called her Jill

So ultimately I am no help haha

  • I think it's totally up to you--whatever feels right for your family.

Personally, we discussed Luke or Lucas...and since we knew we'd call him Luke, we decided his full name will be Luke.

  • I am not a fan of nick names....so my vote is Leonardo which is a BEAUTIFUL name!

  • I am in the fan club of having a longer formal name, but using a nickname.

  • I like using a longer name and then having a nickname. Our 2 year olds name is Addelynn and everyone calls her Adde, I prefer Addelynn over Adde but I couldn't win that battle with the family ;). This LOs name is either going to be Harrison or Charlotte and people are already planning on calling them Harry or Charlie. I like Leonardo though it is a very classic name!!
  • My formal name is Katherine but I go by Katie or Kate. I never understood why my parents just didn't name me what I was going to be called. As you can see everyone has an opinion about this and I think it's ultimately your personal decision. We are naming our daughter Lillian and that's her name, not Lily. If I was going to call her Lily I would have named her Lily.

  • In this case I'd go with Leo. I think it's fine as a name by itself. Plus Leonardo Xavier is eight syllables, very hard to get out when you're mad and calling your kid by their full name ;)

  • I like formal names with nicknames. Just my style- my DD is Lucille but we call her lucy and lulubell.
  • I like nicknames for formal names. We already call DS Sam or Sammy.

  • Dh and I have talked about this. We have friends with legal names like Jimmy or Johny, I don't know why their parents didn't name them James or John or Johnathan and then if they wanted to call them Jimmy or Johny. However, the people I know whose legal names are Jimmy and Johny go by Jim and John.
