Thoughts Please:Missed Miscarriage- sent to Abortion Clinic for fetus removal

I need some opinions and advice please. A close friend of mine suffered an unexpected miscarriage at 19 weeks. She found out the baby had past when going to her regular monthly obgyn appointment and they couldn't find the heartbeat. Her Dr.'s office referred her to a Dr. who did the procedure. She called the Dr. and his office told her that he no longer does the proceedure at the hospital. Instead, he does it at the local Abortion Clinic for legal and liability issues. Not wanting to go there but also in a hurry to have the fetus removed before it caused illness to her (she has sinced realized the baby would have been deceased for about to weeks prior to finding out), she called every hospital in the northern Ohio area and was told by all of them that they did not do the procedure. A catholic hospital even referred her to the abortion clinic. Once she realized she had no options, she went to the abortion clinic where she was treated as if she was having a abortion. She was met by protestors at the door. She had to explain to everyone in the clinic that she came in contact with that she was not having an abortion, her child had already past. She was forced to sit in the same area with others who were having abortions. Although she has insurance from her husband's job, they demanded the money upfront. They did a proceedure called a "D&E" to remove the fetus. To me, it seems it is the same experience/procedure they would have done if she went in a 19 weeks for a abortion.  She is upset, hurt, and now very angry. My questions for all of you are: Don't they usually do a "D&C"? ...And at a hospital? Has anyone ever experienced this situation? Advice on what she should do? She is worried about other women and not wanting them to ever have to go through with this horrible experience.

    This does seem very bizarre. Although I have never had a D&C(found out I had a missed m/c on 3/23/12 and waiting to miscarry naturally) I was told by my midwife that if I decide to have the D&C, it would be done there at the clinic. And I have not heard of anyone else on here having to go to an abortion clinic. Maybe she should talk to someone, hospital administrator or lawyer??? But I can understand her frustration and anger at the situation. Maybe someone who has had a D&C can give you more info too. I am very sorry for your friend's loss and she is very lucky to have your support and friendship during this very difficult time.

    I have since found out that a D&E or DNE is done in the second trimester. My main concern is her being sent to a abortion clinic for the procedure.

    It could be that the clinic has the doctors that are best suited to preform the procedure.  A second trimester loss and D&E is much more complicated than a D&C.(EDIT but required, I was told a D&C can't be done that far along)  I don't know the area and it seems strange to me that they did this but that could be their reasoning.

    Many people I know who have had to go through a late term loss were able to go through a induced labour and have the baby that way.  If she didn't want that or was unable to do that maybe they sent her to the doctors who would have mroe experience with it.

    EDIT to clarify In a second trimester loss you wouldn't be able to do a D&C and would require the more difficult D&E or be induced.

    Abortion is the medical term. 

     And many dr.'s use d&c and d&e interchangably.  I was scheduled for s d&c, but I know  for a fact, vacuum was used, therefore, I had a d&e.

    Also, my mom lost  a baby at 18 weeks, and had a d&e, she did not delivery the baby, so that is normal, imo.

    But I find it very odd that a hospital won't do the procedure, that is ridiculous.

    This. I had a d&e in a hospital, in the ambulatory surgery department. I think it's horrid that your friend has to go through such an ordeal in this time I pain. I'm also surprised they didn't try and deliver the baby vaginally first.

    I had to go to a clinic for my D&E. Your friends experience was exactly the same as mine, except I was 17 weeks.

    I had to keep explaining my situation during their "counseling session" before the procedure. She kept asking if I knew about all the various ways for birth control.

    I sat in a room where a 15yr old girl was having her second abortion. When I left the clinic, protesters were outside calling me baby killer.
