This is a question I am planning on asking when I go for my appt on Wednesday. But from what I have read from my pregnancy books, its certain types of fish, soft cheeses, deli meat and raw foods.
This is a question I am planning on asking when I go for my appt on Wednesday. But from what I have read from my pregnancy books, its certain types of fish, soft cheeses, deli meat and raw foods.
Unpasturized cheese or dairy. Deli meat is fine if it is heated. Raw fish/meat
Those are the straightforward "avoid these foods". Then there are the next level down. Deli meats could contain listeria (a bacteria), so many women only eat them heated. Hot dogs and sausages because of the nitrates (or is it nitrites... I can never remember). Caffeine, though one "serving" a day (think an 8 oz coffee, or regular can of soda) is okay.
Finally fish. You need to be aware of mercury consumption. There are no absolute "cannot eat ever" rules really, but you definitely want to limit your exposure. So the bigger the fish, the higher the mercury usually (think fish that eat other fish that eat other fish- the higher up on the food chain, the more mercury, like swordfish is one of the worst). Tuna is usually a high mercury fish, so they recommend no more than 6 oz a week of the light (not white).
Here's a link for more detailed info. With all of that said, I trust my gut. Your palate will tell you if something is bad most of the time. If something nauseates you randomly, don't eat it. Our super sense of smell and sensitive stomachs are primitive instincts to keep us and our babies alive. If you always eat or drink something and never get sick, you are probably ok and have a decent immunity if something is there. For example, I admit it, in this pregnancy, I have already eaten sushi twice, and will again. I've cut back, but was so fixated by the end of my last pregnancy that I was obsessed. I don't want to feel that way. Frankly telling myself if I really want something, I can have it, makes it that much easier to say no to.
Re: Things to eat and Not to eat that is the Question.

The basic question to ask yourself is, could I get food poisoning from this more easily than from other foods?
Uncooked eggs (cookie dough, poached, ceasar salad dressing made fresh etc), undercooked proteins (all kinds- fish, meat, etc), unpasturized dairy products (raw milk, cheese, etc)....
