For mithers of kids who hate car seats

What do you do??!! I cannot stand the constant screaming in the car! I've tried a mirror that plays music, Toys, playing the radio, complete silence, talking to him, singing, whistlibg, and nothing seems to calm him. He used to only cry at a red light but now he just cries all the time. I think he also hates the headrest in his set but I think it is too early to take out.

Any suggestions? When did your other LOs grow out of it?

  • Dd does this too. I took out her headrest and rolled a burp cloth (cloth diaper kind) a put on each side of her head. I did this b/c her head was slumping over. She actually cries less now. I think she was uncomfortable. Her carseat has a velour material and gets very hot as well. So I crank the air up high. These are my only tricks.

  • My DD was a freaking nightmare in the car until she was 5 months old and we went on a long road trip. I think it was immersion therapy for her cuz she was much better after that.

With DS, we got a different car seat and hes a pretty good car rider. So, either it was the seat, or it's just my dramatic DD.

DS is doing even better in the car the last few days since we got velcro-free seat belt cushions for his neck.

  • DD hates hers, too. My SIL recommended taking out the headrest because my niece hated it. We're going to try that during our next trip. For now, I just make sure she's fed, changed, and not too hot or cold. There is only so much we can do :(

  • Try a different seat. If you are using a carrier go ahead and buy a convertible seat. You aregoing to have to buy one anyway. We have the Graco My ride 65 for my 7 week old.. No issues.

This.  With DS1 he hated his infant car seat, would literally scream from the moment we got in the car till the moment we got out no matter how long the car trip was.  When he was 2 months we bought the britax boulevard and he rarely cried in the car again.

  • does anyone in your family suffer from car sickness?  dd #2 suffers from it & screamed all the time in the car, stroller & swing.  she didn't out grow it but once we figured out what it was it helped to make sure her belly was full when went anywhere.  we had to stop a lot & didn't really go many places to far away for quite awhile.  now that she is four we just take snacks & make sure she eat about 10 -15 mins before we leave.

  • We drive in the car a lot (she comes to work with me, so 20 min drive each way every day  M - F), and eventually she just got used to it.  Now she rarely cries, whereas she used to cry at every red light and sometimes in between.

  • My LO cries/screams in the carseat as well, but she's getting much better. I've done three things including:

    1. use the seat belt pads (velcro on) for the belts near her neck.

    2. put a burp cloth around the head rest

    3. (the biggest) I take her out EVERY day in the car, even for a brief trip to the coffee shop so that we can get her used to it.
