Won't eat in her highchair...

Okay, my DD is not wanting to eat in her highchair.  She will eat finger foods in it, but not her purees. She will only have a few bites and then wants out. If we follow her around the house she will eat a ton!  We obviously don't want to get in the habit of following her around the house to feed her, but it's the only way to get her to eat right now.  Any ideas or anyone else going through this?  TIA! :)

Re: Won't eat in her highchair...

  • I have a 22 month toddler.  We mainly feed him in the highchair.  But sometimes there is not time to put him in the highchair.  We do not have a dining room table.  So we basically eat sitting on our sofa with our food on our coffee table in front of the TV.  And my son will eat there as well and share food with us.  At daycare, they have a toddler table with toddler chairs.  He loves to eat there with his friends.  And we are thinking about getting a toddler table and chairs for our apartment since we are about to add a second child.

Either my husband or I will sit down in our computer chair to feed our son in the highchair.  You have fun times ahead when your DD becomes a toddler--they will want to be more independent and feed themself, and they will throw their food on the floor and make a mess when eating--it is just their way of learning.  And we still feed our son purees at 22 months.  It is like I can get some teryaki chicken and tear it into small pieces, add some cooked vegetables, and then add an apple baby food as a side.  I try to vary his meals to be like the adult meals that I am eating.  We eat a lot of applesauce and bananas which is normally something that my son likes as a side.

  • I'm guessing this was supposed to be on June 2011...

Have you tried the purees in pouches?  We started those around 10-11 months with my son so he could do it himself and that helped.  You'll probably have to push it up for her to start but she'll get the hang of it.

  • I'm not really into forcing kids to eat.  If DD is hungry, she'll eat.  If she's not hungry, I can't force it down her throat.  I want her to have a happy, healthy relationship with eating.  At 9 months, table food is still really optional.  Most of their nutrients should still be coming from BM/Formula.   They're still learning to eat.  She may just be too intrigued by the world to focus on eating at the moment.

At almost 2.5 years, there are still nights when DD eats almost nothing.  Then other nights she eats more than DH.  It's very normal for infants/toddlers to have irregular eating patterns.

I agree with PP, those squeeze pouches are awesome.
