Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Does your dc hit themselves or pull their hair

when they are tired and frustrated? DS started doing this last night and it kind of alarms dh and I. I did not know if this is just a phase they sometimes go through? Thanks ladies.

  • I've heard of it, but I don't have any personal experience with it.  BTW, I like your name!! LOL!

  • DS had a phase about 2 months ago where he would punch himself in the head over and over while he was nursing?  So strange but I asked the pedi and she said not to worry about it, he'll stop.  And he did after about a month.
  • she hits me :( when she is drinking her bottle to fall alseep she sometimes slaps my face or pinches me,  which i discourage and replace by showing her "nice touches" and "be nice"

sometimes she slaps her own head, I think she likes the noise or something.

  • DD used to pull her hair when she was nursing. I don't remember how old she was when she did it, but she has since stopped.
  • DD plays with her hair and sometimes ends up pulling it and then crying.  It's actually hard not to laugh.  She rubs her eyes when she is tired and sometimes flays her arms up to her face to do that and ends up hitting herself.

  • Yes! DD was hitting herself like crazy on the side of her head a few weeks ago and I was totally freaked out. It has died down a lot recently and I stopped worrying.

  • Yep. This phase started about 3 weeks ago. He slaps his hands up and down sometimes hitting himself, me, his bottle or the chair.  He also pulls at his hair. He only does these things when he's tired and trying to go to sleep. I read that these are self soothing methods and nothing to be concerned about.

  • DD pulls her hair when I'm feeding her before she falls alseep. What I do is give her a blanket or stuffy to hold and it keeps her hands occupied. She hasn't done it since.

  • yup, matthew pulls his hair, he has been doing it for 5 months now.
  • ?DS pulls his hair. ?It freaked me out when he started, especially since it's not only when he's tired but if he seems upset he does it too. ?I really hate to think that he's anxious but even though I give him lots of cuddles he will keep doing it.
  • Thanks ladies!

  • DD also pulls her hair, usually when she is tired.  She's been doing it for months now.
  • DS scratches the back of his head when he's tired or worn out, rubs his face/eyes when he is half-awake/half-asleep (and thus usually wakes himself up more - aaaah), and does this crazy punch to his head when he's nursing which only involves his thumb. The kid is nuuuuts and I canNOT wait until he grows out of it...

  • And I thought it was just Lily! She pulls her hair and does what we call the very un-pc "tomohawk chop," where her arm goes up and down, sometimes hitting her head or face. DH calls it the "international sign for, 'I'm tired!'"

  • I wish that was all DS was doing...the past two months or maybe even longer, I dunno, he's been hitting his forehead against the pack n play edge, or his crib spindle thingies. It is SO very disturbing, I yell and tell him to please stop baby and then rub his head. I know its him being tired, but very disturbing and leaving little red marks on his forehead :(  Sometimes he does it lightly like he's tapping his head only but other times like full force headbutt which usually leads to crying, mommy coming to the rescue, and then he's out like a light. Usually during the daytime naps he does this. Poor babies! :(
  • DD will scratch herself (left over behavior from when she was 2 months old and had the doctors were under treating her eczema) or pull hair when she's mad.  She's also starting to bang the back of her head on the screen door because she likes the sound or the feeling.  Babies are funny how they try to soothe themselves even if it seems harsh to us.
