So I'm very hopeful that in the next week and a half things get rolling on their own. But if they don't because of a range of health reasons I may have to decide on induction or cesarean section.
I of course want to carry them as long as I can, and I also want to go naturally. BUT if I can't and my cervix is still closed and hard I am weighing my options, I am looking for thoughts and experiences. Please know I'm trying to make the safest decision for me and my girls.
Re: if things don't get started on their own?
its funny....last week i was thinking the exact same thing....then my water broke and they were born at 35w5d or 6d.
the more natural route would be induction so at least you can deliver naturally if they are positioned right. my docs were going to do this at 38 weeks for me. .
you are at a great milestone right now fyi...you did IF right so you know when you conceived?
If the babies are in position, I would go for the induction. I had to have one with DS, and I was completely closed and long too. They first gave me something to soften the cervix and then started the pitocin. So even if you are still closed and hard, an induction is possible.
I was admitted and started on meds at 4pm that Thursday, water broke at 6am the next morning and DS was here at 1:23 pm. So less than 24 hours of labor. I will say the pitocin is horrendous, and I would have died without an epidural. I got that at 10am on Friday, made all the difference in the world.
Whatever you decide, you will be fine. But as other post said, the recovery from a vag delivery is much easier than a c-section, so I've heard.... so it's worth it to try induction first.
I had a pitocin induction at 36w1d or 37w1d (depending on which doctor you asked) and was 5 cm but not in labor going in to it. I delivered vaginally and naturally, med free about 2.5 hours after the pitocin was started. Then baby B didn't want to come and my AMAZING OB sat in the OR (where I had to deliver just in case) for 2.5 hours waiting for contractions to start again, etc etc. He was born naturally and vaginally after that 2.5 hour wait. I didn't tear, had no pain and needed zero pain meds.
I know I had a fairly dreamy delivery (despite excruciating pitocin induced contractions) but it was worth every second! I was able to care for my twins on my own 2 days after I delivered when my DH had to return to work. If I had a C-section I wouldn't have even been home 2 days after delivery. And I can't imagine the pain...it really must be awful! And to try to care for twins and recover?! I would try for a vaginal delivery NO DOUBT!!!
All that being said, I could have definitely ended up with the dreaded "double" whammy if my OB hadn't been so wonderful. Discuss with your doctor what their plan is if labor stalls after one is delivered, if the second baby turns during delivery, etc etc to try to feel out how committed they are to you delivering vaginally.
GL, it's a big decision! Either way your babies are on their way soon!!
